Spring is under way, walking a bit hindered

So here's what I saw this morning on the patio

Plural snowdrops! Last year I think one came up. But here, wow, maybe four, a banner year.

And daffodils are just starting to show. They were evidently starting up under the snow.

It's the first time for a few days I've been out on the deck, but now the snow has receded and I thought I'd finally take a walk to the pond, booted and hatted and long coated, it feels like the 20s f., a bit cold.

Then the plan hit a snag, almost at the pond. Namely a big old downed  tree blocking an entire section. It was old and probably rotted, so the weight of the snow with wind seems to have broken it off at the base.

I need to get through there to access the pond. I could have found a way round by a couple of streets but it occurred to me that it would be wise not to go where there may be other trees waiting to fall on unwary walkers.

So I took pictures to send to management in case they don't know yet, and came home. Late edit: they didn't know. Landscapers on their way now.

I'm now planning on a cup of tea and a slice of the chocolate walnut cake I made yesterday in case of a visit this week from Handsome Son. I have to test to make sure it's okay.

But first I learned to use Resistbot and sent emails via it to all my reps demanding they get us out of Iran, no bombs to hide the Epstein files.

Happy day, good to get out and find signs of spring, unless you're looking for signs of fall where you are. Or look for signs of chocolate cake, it's all good.

  1. It's a beautiful day here but still below freezing so tricky with ice. I walked to the library for the book discussion. No signs of spring here though.
I think your photos look larger. Sorry to bother you about this. I can hit command+ to enlarge your whole blog.

  2. I'm sure the test of that chocolate walnut cake turned out well!

    1. Nice combo: a spoonful of plain whole milk yogurt on a slice of chocolate walnut cake with tea. Four star.

  3. Good for you for reporting the downed tree! Maybe a walk to the pond will be possible in a day or two...

    1. Since the management office is an hour away -- they manage a lot of townhouse developments -- the manager is happy to hear, rather than get angry complaints about stuff he didn't know about. He and I get along well. I'm hoping to get to the pond soon.

  4. That cake does sound delightful - and good on you for reporting the tree - hopefully a clear run (well, walk) soon.

    1. I hope they at least get it cut up and hauled out of the way. Soon the grass will need pre emergent work and it's impossible to access, as you see. Yes, running is in my past. Well, I've never been a runner, more a brisk walker.

  5. It's always good to test taste a recipe 😋 and sure this one was very good and enjoyed by you both. It seems you have more ground showing than here in Nashua, NH because there are still snow mountains in most parking lots here. A couple of weekends ago, I did see a tree full of robins, so there is hope for Spring's eventual arrival.

    1. We had a couple of milder days which melted quite a bit of the snow it's nice to see the grass, well, mud. And masses of robins are a good sign.

  6. Cake sounds wonderful. Glad they are taking care of the tree.
    Nice to see flowers growing.

    1. I hope they don't clean up the tree too neatly. Wildlife needs fallen branches. Usually they cut it up and chip only some of it, leaving the main trunk lying in the trees.

  7. I keep wondering when the bamboo will start sprouting, requiring daily kicking. A sure sign of spring here. I think I prefer your signs of spring.
Sad about the tree but they too have lifespans.

    1. The tree is ready for its next existence, sheltering wildlife, hosting fungi, feeding the earth. I like our current signs of spring. The personal sign is the crop of blisters in my mouth!

    2. Oh, no! You get these every year, don't you?

    3. Every spring and fall. A nuisance more than a problem. It's a sure sign the season is changing!

  8. Oh, so your pond isn't on public land. Things work differently there.

    1. The pond is on the public golf course. But the trees run between the two properties so this kind of work depends on where the base of the tree is, our property or theirs. This time evidently it's ours.

  10. All that snow is pretty much gone - that's incredible!!! Now let's just hope it stays gone. Nice that you could get out for a walk, fallen tree notwithstanding.

    1. We have very good drainage, so as the snow melts it runs into the earth quickly. Just a couple of mild days did it. We still have mountains in parking lots.

    1. Resistbot was easy -- I followed the links and instructions in Chop Wood, Carry Water today!
I have built a working relationship with mgt and they know now I only complain about serious stuff and I bring receipts. It pays.

  14. Important to test the chocolate cake before sharing with Handsome Son. I’d test it some more and then make a new one. I brought home a chocolate cake yesterday.

  16. With a tree on the ground you get a rare chance to see things that have been going on way up in the branches all these years.

    1. This one has squirrels' messy nests and a lot of green lichen that I hadn't seen from ground level. I couldn't get near the trunk to see if there were woodpecker nesting places, but I bet there are. The way it fell filled up the area so I couldn't walk around it to check.

  17. We are still snow covered so no signs of spring yet. Very wise to stay out of the tumble of trees. Chocolate walnut cake sounds wonderful.

  18. Well, no visible signs of spring here -- we haven't seen the ground/grass in 6 weeks and 2 days. But, I mean, who's counting?! Resistbot, eh? Intriguing. I haven't heard of that, I don't think. I did call my reps today though! I like to call before 9 AM so I can leave my 3 voicemails (quicker!) on my topic of the day. Well, I'm not sure Senate offices even pick up now, but my Rep's office frequently does. It's just easier to leave the message, and they do send me letters in response with their position on the topic (on lovely, heavy paper). No walnut cake photo?

    1. I didn't post yet another chocwalnut picture because I thought you'd seen enough. Also I forgot. Great to hear you're busy pushing your ptb, thank you. It really counts, every bit of pressure adds up to a lot of pressure.
