Great textile day with boxes

In the middle of the online Asian textile presentation which I think will be on YouTube too, highly recommend, the mail carrier arrived.

He waited patiently while I finally got the front door curtain open, it sticks, and handed over a Treasure Box from a blogista who had gone to some trouble to manage doing it, her day to day not being easy. Much appreciated, P.

Long story, but it's about unused sock yarn and some unfinished projects from a skilled knitter.

Complete with the needles. And pattern. I spent a while sorting and playing. There's yarn for a couple of pairs of socks, and a few balls which will be enough for lanyards to go with anti ICE whistles.

What a day! This yarn is very nice quality, and I have some ideas.  I already have a good destination for the blue piece on straight needles.

Earlier I'd started on a bergamot box. To show my brain feverishly trying to remember bergamot, it presented me first with bento, then with vertigo. No, I don't know why either.

What I do know is that this orange was light-years easier to manage than the lemons.

It agreed to go on the jars, no argument. So we'll see if I get a box and lid. The smell of the orange in the boiling water was heavenly.

So that's Saturday.

Happy day everyone, No Kings!

  1. Vertigo? You mean it made you dizzy?

  2. What a treasure trove! You'll have fun with that gift.

Re bergamot boxes: it seems that one needs two different size molds (?), if one wants them to nest like a proper box. I molded mine over two identical glasses, hence they have identical diameters. My attempt with oranges was much more successful than with lemons, even if they don't nest. A fun project.

    1. I think if the drinking glass has a wider rim than the base, you use both. The rim part will probably fit the base. I wonder if you could send pictures? You really made a good try, using both fruit.

    3. I admit to assuming too much there. But now you know, and you have bergamot pintrays!

Looking forward to seeing the orange progress!

    1. It's not the first time I've finished a departed person's project. Last time it was socks for her sister. It's a thing women do for women.

  4. Time for me to get a ponderosa lemon and try my hand at a vertigo box or maybe bento.

    1. Started out seeming dull, but improved sharply in the afternoon. Some days work that way.

    1. That's fine. Artists and makers like an appreciative audience.

  7. That sock pattern is the one I bought when I was learning to knit my first pair of socks. A woman in town opened a little yarn shop where she gave lessons and also formed a knitting group. I tried but didn't really fit in with the group, but I've always been grateful for the start on my sock-knitting journey. :)

  8. What a lovely treasure box, that will be well used I'm sure. I can imagine the smell of the orange water. I think my favorite citrus smell is limes, it always reminds me of Mexico.

    1. The smell of limes reminds me of Trinidadian friends in Manchester winters long ago, bringing a tropical excitement to the greyness with their food and lime juices brought back from home.

  9. I believe the thing I google most is, "What is it called when..."
I lose words daily. They generally do pop back but if I am writing, I need them NOW. I despair.
What a beautiful gift you were given in all of that yarn.

  10. A box of yarn-y inspiration is just what you need mid-January. Your friend knows you well. And the found oranges are working out well.

  15. There is a lovely group somewhere online that finds folk to finish projects left on the death of a loved one - sort of memory projects. Maybe those socks fall into that category. Good of you to take it on.

  16. Hey Boud. Does the smell help? Have you ever made orange extract? I found a lady on YouTube and she makes all these extracts from fruit and things. Not sure if that is of help though. Tossing it out there just in case.

    1. Not sure what you're asking here. If it's about using the pulp the good pulp will go into recipes, the older out for the squirrels. I'm allergic to oranges, need to avoid them other than making boxes, that is.
