A lovely day going before a crash bang wallop

The knitting group was great fun, and here's a finished object. Blocked, worn to work because it was cool enough. It feels wonderful. The knitter is very pleased with it, and spread it out to show the group, now up to four people.

Photo bombing is my current portable item, tea napkins, hemming and mitering.

Then home to tea but first a trip across the street to the mailbox. One step up, and as I was getting the key out, I tripped out of my shoe and came down with a crash.  Shoe flew off, bags here, keys there.

The good news is that I fell squarely on both knees and both hands, spreading the impact.  Two little girls came running down the street to ask if they could help, was I okay.

They were too small to help me up, once I'd found I probably hadn't broken anything. Then a woman also running, very concerned, I'm the Aged Auntie in this largely Indian community, and gave me a hand up. Such kind little girls, too.

I made it to my feet, assured her I was only a few steps from my house, and finally I got the mail and made it home.

I hadn't hit my head, luckily stopped falling a couple of inches short of the mailbox cluster, and determined I hadn't broken a wrist, amazing considering the impact.

Then I proceeded to find arnica pellets, terrific for bruising, and my freezer block wrapped in a towel, also a bag of frozen chopped apples for my wrists. Nearest I could get to the classic frozen peas.

Today I've found various other bruises, and the arnica gel came in handy. I was afraid of finding I needed to limp on both legs, but in fact I navigated the stairs fine, and made tea.

Apart from bandaids on both wrists, which might give rise to questions.. I'm  fine.

Next door neighbor who'd seen Handsome Son the other day with the stepladder and found out about the ceiling lights, stopped by later, to ask and, since I'd decided to just replace the fixture, said fine, I'll install it, let me know when.

I also wondered if he was tactfully establishing that I was on my feet.

So, speaking of new normal..

  1. Well, that's a new one on me - tripping out of your shoe. So glad the damage wasn't more serious - bumps and bruises will heal (and arnica is good stuff....we have it both in the cream and the pill form). Glad the neighbourhood came to your rescue - not everyone would want to get involved. Take care of you!

  4. Phew! The fear of falling is real as we age. We do not just leap up and go on about our business. I am SO glad that you were not seriously injured and I, like your other commenters, am so glad that you live in such a caring community.

    1. I don't know how I'd have got up from the sidewalk without help. So I was thankful.

  5. Sorry you had a tumble! Prayers all is healing well
Mary Jane shoes are looking better everyday for the reason you fell. ag8ng feet seem to swell and ebb like the tides, making shoes and sandals sometimes too loose.

  6. Oh my! I'm so glad you are okay. What sweet little girls to want to help you. I had a fall last week and it really does shake you up doesn't it? I hope you are not too sore from your fall. Icing it quickly is a big help.

  7. Oh dear! I am so glad it wasn't worse and you've got caring neighbors there. Falling can be frightening, and yes the best I've found for bruising is arnica.

  8. Falls are the pits. Glad it was no worse than what you're saying and there were a slew of neighbors to pick you up and dust you off. But, do keep up posted.

  9. That was scary, even after the fact and you being okay. ouch. You may find that tomorrow will be an event to remember when you start to get out of bed. Nature has a way of creeping up on us that way.

I agree, laced shoes or at least shoes that are hard to lose off your feet might be the way to go. Nothing is more unsettling than taking a spill at our age.

  10. I have to have shoes that fit well - no slides or flip flops. Otherwise I step right out of them and am apt to go down. Landing on your knees is better than landing on your head but probably not less painful. Take care.

    1. Yes, I can't manage slides or clogs, need shoes that are snug. The ones I fell in were just that! They're the nearest I can get to sandals for summer. So I was dismayed when one got knocked off.
