ANZAC biscuits and other issues

The Great Fence-Off is still on. After about 18 months of false starts and misleading emails, the HOA is now saying June for start date to replace our fences.

I just received a letter specifying more stuff be removed. Refers to deck and "offset gate", no idea what that is. Hard to tell what they mean, so I'll show the letter to Contractor Michael who built my deck, and see what's what.

Less than three weeks and they suddenly decide this. Why not tell me before, when they talked about the tree, I ask you. I got the old (dead, in fact) tree removed. Could have addressed this last fall if they'd mentioned it.

Just as I was running out of stressors!

Trying ANZAC biscuits today. Just came across this on line today, lovely community cookbook, from the look of the typing and the spiral binding.

I don't have golden syrup nor coconut, not sultanas. So I'll sub extra oats, honey and golden raisins. We'll see.

Those jam drops look ok, too.

Earliest baking ever. I needed a couple for breakfast. Changed my mind about raisins remembering I don't like them in cookies.

Probably should have made them smaller and used a second cookie sheet. Maybe I'll call them honeycomb cookies, and pretend I meant this.

They're okay, nicely chewy, a bit sweet for my taste. At least for breakfast. But they're oatmeal. So they're breakfast.

    1. Since they're ANZAC, they're Australian and NZ in terminology. Yes, cookies. If I make them again I'll cut way back in the sugar. I didn't know what it might do to texture this first try.
Sultanas have seeds, they're like big raisins. I don't think I've ever seen them in the US.

  2. Oh goodness, I hope you won't have to remove your deck!!! That's just wrong on so many levels. I surely hope they are planning to pay to have it re-installed if that's the case. And if it's anything like the management in this building you'll still be waiting for the fence next fall. We had bran for breakfast - in the form of muffins. Works for me!

    1. I have a text in to my deck friend. At one point they say every obstruction within one foot. Next they're saying deck, and walkway and gate. The gate is the original one. Do I think it's the little walkway joining deck to where the gate closes. A couple of square feet. They say they'll remove it if I don't and, get this, charge me $1500! I wonder if they're working for Tony Soprano.

    2. I can scarcely believe their high-handedness!!! $1500 - outrageous, especially when the don't specify what they're talking about. Am hoping they're referring to the walkway which contractor artist Michael is on tap to deal with. Sheesh.

      Honeycomb biscuits indeed. :-)

    3. Charge you? For something they're doing? Sounds to me as though this company needs to be challenged and another one hired that's honest. It's beginning to appear that nothing you do will satisfy them and they will just keep coming with more demands. Shysters!!!

    4. Contractor Michael thinks it's just the walkway. He will remove in one piece and replace it after the fence is done. He lives across the street, was quoted $500 for about twice as much removal work on his own patio. No rhyme nor reason.

  3. Nice baking. The deck issue, prayers it isn't more hassles for you.

    1. Contractor artist Michael came, studied, will remove just the little walkway, carefully so as to replace it after the fence ordeal, I mean project, is done.

  4. The cookies look good even if they are a bit sweet and honeycomb shaped! Oats definitely make it breakfast.

    1. Yes, I think I'll claim I meant it all along!

  6. I'd heard of Anzac biscuits but never knew what they were. Now I have a better idea.
I made a nice batch of oatmeal cookies for my husband and grandson to take fishing with them. They do have raisins and also chocolate chips because fishermen need lots of energy. I would not be surprised at all if some of them were not eaten at breakfast.

  7. ANZAC is the acronym for Australian and NZ Army Corps. ANZAC Day commemorated all the troops from there who were in combat, abd particularly the terrible losses at Gallipoli.
Women baked and sent ANZAC biscuits to the young troops at Gallipoli, a recipe that would stay edible for that long journey -- no eggs --and be nourishing energy food. Such valor, young kids crossing the planet for a cause they thought was good. Tragic misuse of troops by Churchill, unnecessary losses. I usually mark ANZAC Day, April 25, and missed this year. But the biscuits are still good.

  8. I'm sorry to hear about the fence problems with the HOA. It seems like they should be required to give much more warning.

You are right, if it has oatmeal it can pass for breakfast! I love home made oatmeal cookies and I've been known to eat one for breakfast.

  9. The battle of Gallipolis made an impression on me when I read about it. "We buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs; then it started all over again." Horrible.
