Lilac time, iris and the dating (pit) game

A few yards away on a neighboring patio

The scent drifts over on the wind.

And the first iris opened yesterday. I think the pachysandra has covered the others too much to bloom. Plenty of foliage, no buds yet.

And, in the hope springs eternal category, here are some Medjool date pits soaking for a few days to see if I can get germination. I'm thinking of a houseplant rather than a date crop. Has anyone reading succeeded in sprouting a plant from date pits?

The ginger hasn't done anything yet, but the yellow potatoes are sprouting.

I'm impatient for the fencing project to be done so I can get the ficus tree out of the living room and to camp on the patio.

That's the naturalist's notebook for the day.

  1. I've never heard of sprouting date pits but definitely worth a try! Keep us updated on any successes.
    Haha!

  2. P.S. I hasten to assure you that I doubt I have ever once made an intentional pun but sometimes they do just spontaneously appear.

    1. Dates really make their own puns, despite us.

    1. If anything happens, there'll be root by root coverage.

  5. Resident Chef planted 'the garden' today - 3 herbs (one went belly up while it waited for the outdoors), several cherry tomatoes and a couple peppers. Small balcony = not much room for plants. Will be interested to see what happens with the dates. We're currently watching an avocado attempt to grow.

    1. I can not grow avocadoes no matter what I do. A friend gave me a plant one time, potted up, growing great. In a day from being in my house it died. She said she couldnt grow anything else. We concluded it was body chemistry.

    2. The pit is currently perched over a bottle of water and is slowly putting down a single root. It's cracked in two and there's a teeny little bit of green showing in the middle but it's most definitely a slow process.

    3. Maybe you'll do a little plant detour on Mumblings?

  6. Lovely iris, it reminds me of a vintage type that also has a big scent.

    1. It's an old transplant from a farm. Massive scent! You're quite right.

  7. I am very curious about the date seeds. I checked out Google and found that some date seeds will grow a type of palm tree. If you Google it you will no doubt find a lot of information. Keep us posted - you never know what you may get!

  8. I actually had some success planting a date seed. My nephew, after eating a date, dropped the seed in his pocket. Several days later he gave it to me and I planted it and . . . up popped a little date tree. I gave it back to him though. I don't care for palm trees of any sort.

    1. That's encouraging. We'll see if any of mine germinate.
