Yesterday was a lovely day, breathable air, warm and, later, a shower to settle the pollen and clean the air. I sat on the deck and watched fledglings.
Two little downy woodpeckers wambling about more or less catching insects on the trees, house sparrows dancing and chasing. Watching them learn to catch their own food. I've been hearing woodpecker calls a lot recent, so now I see the family out.
I finished the current weaving
Fred Bear and Ursula guarding the three panels and one pocket.
I really need to take a few days to let my neck heal before I warp up again. But it's fine, plenty of other things to enjoy.
Yesterday I did a bit of Freecycle
Handsome Partner's London Fog coat, which he wore for years, then I did. But now I'm shorter and smaller all over and it swamps me. So it's moving on. He used to look so handsome in it, back when he was walking.
It's still in great condition, too. A bit better than mine, come to think of it. Nah, I'm good.
And recently food has been interesting. Here's a great spicy tuna/cilantro with jasmine rice and dessert
And yesterday I made a really great spaghetti sauce, the one with plenty of onions and butter and turmeric, good quality canned tomatoes, simmered for ages.
Best parmesan grated, peppers to shake over, best spaghetti, as my Mom would say, all good ingredients. Simple food made with the best ingredients I can afford.
It's a lot of pasta, but after a couple of days' main events, it will be a side for the chicken I'm roasting today, marinated with garlic and yogurt overnight.
This sauce is great, the original recipe being to simmer a whole onion, then, the original famous cook said to THROW AWAY the onion. That's why I'm not naming her, the vandal. Throw away beautiful food ? Never.
But the butter idea is great, I'll give her that.
Happy day everyone, are you coming up with cool puzzle clues?
Stand by Ukraine in the dam explosion disaster the invaders have unleashed on them. They need all the support we can send, financial, military and moral
I'm making my own tomato sauce today having finally accumulated enough tomatoes for a batch. I do it every year. very simple recipe. and staying indoors mostly as the next week is all high 90s and maybe even triple digits.
ReplyDeleteHome tomato sauce rules. I don't envy you those temps.
DeleteYour weaving is so great! The finished project will be beautiful. And London Fog is durable, well-made, classic style! I had a couple of their coats over the years. Always worth the money.
ReplyDeleteSeveral prospective takers agree with you.
DeleteSome say that woodpecker is extinct. You know the one with the ivory bill, but not everybody agrees.

Every now and then we hear of a sighting. Or a hearing. I live in hopes. And appreciate sneaky clues!
DeleteLondon Fog is giving me a niggling. I may once have had an LF overcoat. If I am correct, it was passed onto me from someone who had passed away.
ReplyDeleteIt's well enough made to last!
DeleteQuality always shows. I use to say "buy well, buy once". The LF coat is a testament to that! We has a little rain yesterday. As you probably know adding butter or carrots to tomato sauce lowers the acidity and sweetens the sauce. We have woodpeckers and nuthatches in abundance. I even see a pileated woodpecker on occasion. My favorite food is a roasted chicken.
ReplyDeleteButter always takes the edge off!
DeleteVery nice coat. Someone will truly appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteAnd very nice-looking sauce, too! I am sure that YOU will appreciate it. I love Fred and Ursula keeping such good watch over your weaving.
I'm hoping the coat has a whole new lifespan. It's served my family well. Handsome Son wasn't interested. Not his style.
DeleteGlad you had a good breathing day.
ReplyDeleteSpagetti sauce from scratch, using canned tomato paste and puree us a very good idea.
No paste, no puree, whole canned tomatoes only. .very good, too.
DeleteI love listening to the birds! The spaghetti looks very tasty.
ReplyDeleteI just had a baby wren stagger past my shoulder on his way down from the fence. They're unaware of me, too young to be alert.
ReplyDeleteIt is 92 here so no outside for me today. The boy and I had a nice nap. Your sauce sounds lovely.
ReplyDeleteWe are adding roasted garlic to various dishes lately. It’s so good with EVO and Parmesan on pasta.
ReplyDeleteLove the tiny Downy Woodpeckers. We don’t get them in our yard. You are fortunate to be able to watch them.
Psighetti, yum. The coat will now wrap a deserving person.
ReplyDeleteSimple food with good ingredients. Perfect. Everybody should cook like this instead of trying to replicate fancy restaurant dishes with expensive ingredients.
ReplyDeleteI like good food, and agree that it doesn't have to be fancy. And I'm blessed with a digestion that can handle spices, garlic, gluten, all the things other people may have to be careful with. That certainly simplifies my life.
DeleteSneaky clue, which I missed!
DeleteI love free cycle for getting rid of stuff and in the past I used it to get what I needed.
ReplyDeleteAfter my big cull I’ve been very good at not buying Until this trip anyway lol
I think this trip is a one off!
DeleteI don't think I've ever heard of adding butter to tomato sauce so will have to pass that tip along to Resident Chef.
ReplyDeleteWe have downy woodpeckers visiting our suet block all winter long - sometimes the male looks as though he falls asleep hanging onto the feeder because there's no sign of movement. So much fun to watch.
Maybe the woodpecker is too stuffed to move! I notice the female tends to wait for her share. Males tend to aggressively defend their food even against their mate.
