Morning sighting
This was the first thing I saw this morning when I looked out at the weather.
Mrs Downy confirming that the branch is dead, and interestingly stocked with food.
We see both Downy and Hairy woodpeckers regularly at our feeder. The little Downy often appears to fall sleep while he's there. I think over the winter we had two pairs of Downy's but it's hard to tell.
We're three floors up so not hugely high We have two large blue spruce trees practically right beside us so there's good cover for them should they need it.
Our building is only four floors so not too high. We don't see robins or sparrows up this high for some reason. Would be nice to have those come to the feeder too.
Thank you. As you see I was above her, looking down from the bedroom window. So she wasn't aware and stayed around long enough to get at least a recognizable pic. All previous attempts were blurs, when I was on the ground looking up, and they were only too aware.
Catching up on some of what I've missed out on here last week - this caught my eye. Just this morning, as I was sitting in an upstairs room by a window a Pileated Woodpecker landed on a tree about 15 feet away. I've never seen one in person, and was so surprised at how large it was!

He looks large for a downy woodpecker. Good photo!
ReplyDeleteDo you think maybe a Hairy? I didn't see her bill well enough to know. Downies are common around here. You might be right.
DeleteComparing photos of New Jersey woodpeckers, I think you're right for a hairy woodpecker.
DeleteThank you!

ReplyDeleteLovely to have them. They must be feeding quite high up, if they're on a high balcony?

DeleteAh, I thought several floors higher. Yes, that would work nicely for quite a few birds. And the trees are a big advantage.

DeleteThat is a beautiful scene outside your window!
ReplyDeleteHighly recommended as the first sight of the day.
DeleteVery nice picture. I can seldom get pictures of the woodpeckers here (tall trees) but I hear them rat-tat-a-tatting all the time!

ReplyDeleteI've never seen one at all. What a treat.
