I was up long before dawn, ready to go, and did a bit. Knitted on the glove I started yesterday, continued on the final sock of two pairs, and stitched, too.
I've been continuing to add to my Kindle library with great bargains on great works. Now I've added lovely funny Trollope, and I'm currently into The Warden, a favorite.
So, just the way I switch from craft to craft, I switch as I read, Mansfield Park to Cranford to Trollope. With Pym and other writers as the spirit moves me. I don't mind following several books at once.
Fall walk, local leaf peeping, cheerful Halloween ghosties
And a mystery plant near the cosmos, where I scattered wildflower seed
No idea what this is. Identification welcome.
I had written up to here before the day suddenly changed..
Then I came home, read Trollope, dozed off, read more, decided to make a very unusual for me, cup of coffee.
Then I noticed a brand new water stain had suddenly appeared on the living room ceiling.
And went upstairs to find the source. Suddenly my feet on the rug were wet. The water heater had sprung a leak. Good thing I was home.
So I turned off the house water, called the plumber and Gary. Gary, with baby A., came over, she lay on the rug looking interested while he mopped with towels and tried to find the source, which we didn't.
The plumber came in no time, good having a long-term plumber based about a mile away, drained the tank, turned off the power, and early Thursday I should get a new tank installed. Meanwhile I have cold water, that's fine.
And I don't know why I just don't set up direct debit for the plumber at this rate.
So that was Wednesday, and I'd written the first part of the heading before it all changed.
Happy day everyone, let's hope your sudden emergencies have sudden help.
Yikes! A very apt title. Glad you have both Gary and the plumber on speed dial. And glad you had a peaceful walk and bookish start to the day before events quickened.

Yes, it was like two different days. I was so glad I caught Greg the plumber at just the right moment -- here in about fifteen minutes.
DeleteI've always wished my children had qualified as plumber, solicitor and electrician and could have saved me a fortune!
ReplyDeleteArchaeology, textile print design and admin are all good jobs but not useful in an emergency!
I'm glad you found the reason for the leak and got it sorted quickly
I know families with a plumber who can't get a plumber! Always at other people's houses!
DeleteCold water is not fine, well not for long. 'I'll just put the kettle on' takes on a new meaning.
ReplyDeleteLol at direct debit for your plumber.
So true. But I can do basics for now.
DeleteIf it’s not one thing it’s another. Water can cause so much damage.
ReplyDeleteIt's a nightmare to look up and see an ominous stain suddenly appear on the ceiling! Cue scary music.
DeleteOh dear, bad news about the water heater. Sudden emergencies are no fun. But your autumn photos are lovely, as is your embroidery.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was a day of contrasts! Thank you for the nice words about the embroidery.
DeleteNasty surprise but good that you managed to sort it out quickly.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking recently I might soon need to replace the heater. So it confirmed that!
DeleteI knew I had read a Trollope back in high school but had to look up his bibliography to deduce that it was Barchester Towers.
ReplyDeleteThat's a popular school choice. I don't think many high schoolers can get his humor and political shade, though.
DeleteMy friend in Washington who blogs also had a hot water heater go out on her recently but it was leaking into a room that no one uses and she didn't realize it until walls and floors needed replacing. Thank goodness you caught yours before that happened. Still- what a pain.
ReplyDeleteMy plant app said you have Goldenmane Tickseed there. A species of Calliopsis.
Yes, it pays to check all over the house. My neighbor didn't know she had squirrels until she went into the unused bedroom and found holes in the ceiling and debris all over the floor!
DeleteThanks for the plant id, I'll learn more now.
Well, the day started off well. I'd say it ended well, considering. Gary and a speedy plumber were a blessing. Let us hope today simply purrs along.
ReplyDeleteYes, it did end peacefully anyway. The bit in the middle wasn't such fun.
DeleteIt was a lovely start to the day! There’s always something…
ReplyDeleteThe day was nice early and late. The middle, not so much.
Deleteone advantage of having a one story house. when the hot water heater springs a leak it doesn't appear on the ceiling. pretty foliage for your walk.
ReplyDeleteTrue. I suppose they install them upstairs because that's near the laundry area, which is handy for the bedrooms. No lugging laundry up and down stairs.
DeleteI'm so sorry, after that wonderful start. I'm glad help was quick.
ReplyDeleteUes, the rapid rescue was the good part.
DeleteYes, that is.
DeleteWill the ceiling need to be changed? I’d definitely put in a claim from your insurance. Even if the structure isn’t compromised, you’ll definitely get mould growing and that’s never good.
ReplyDeleteI’m very glad you noticed it before it got much worse
At this point, it doesn't reach the deductible, so I haven't thought about claiming. But I'll bear it in mind.
DeleteI started reading Trollope's "Barchester Towers" once. Only lasted a few pages before departing forever.
ReplyDeleteI think you either love Trollope's shade or you don't. He's full of sharp political digs, many of which still ring true. The treatment of the Warden by a newspaper and shocking agreement by people supposed to be allies, is very like the current story about Biden.
DeleteIf I were creatively stitching those leaves, I'm pretty sure I'd have a mess. I am always impressed when you work (would intuitively be the right word?) and art just flows from your fingers.
ReplyDeleteThank you for those nice words. Yes, I'm not very rule bound. I know a lot of stitches and I like to decide what and when as I go, rather than follow a plan.
