Today's the 63rd anniversary of our wedding, in the mad dash to get Handsome Partner's dissertation finished and accepted before leaving the UK for the University of Wisconsin. Stony broke students.
We're cutting the cake in the student Union building which hosted our reception, their first. My dress was borrowed, the cake was a wedding gift, the few flowers and greenery donated by the catering staff at the Union. The winter had been so brutal that no flowers were available, usually supplied from the Scilly Isles, but few that year. The photographs were a wedding gift, including this one.
The things we didn't know were to come in our lives. Just as well, really.
Today I think there was a mix-up with the weather. We were supposed to get rain to wash away the remaining snow. But I woke to this
Pretty, and this was definitely the winter to be car-free.
Back to the immediate future. If you're in the US now's your chance to register official comments about the benighted ballroom idea T***p is trying to build.
Still my flag, a bit battered but we'll reclaim it, you'll see.

That's a lovely photo of you two and you're right, best we don't know what's coming in our lives.
ReplyDeleteWe've been forecast for 8 inches of snow in the next day. Should be fun.
I hope the server is overwhelmed due to the number of complaints about that bloody ballroom.
Stay warm my friend.
With any luck that server will be blitzed.
DeleteIn the picture we were happily unaware that three weeks later he'd be rushed into the hospital fighting for his life. He won.
OMG, I had no idea.
DeleteI've always thought a simple wedding is the way to go and it sounds like yours was ideal. Our wedding was simple too - we actually went to the home of my cousin who was a retired minister and we only had our best man and maid of honour and two guests, along with the minister's wife. We returned to the RC's parents home afterwards to a surprise 'reception' we knew nothing about. As a little girl I always imagined Harry (the minister) would marry me and every time I saw him I would ask if he would marry me and his response always was 'but I'm already married'. It became a tradition and when I wrote to him asking him to actually marry me, the response I got was a large piece of paper with 'but I'm already married' in big letters, but down in the corner he wrote 'of course I will'. He also married my mom and dad so I was pretty happy that he could perform our ceremony too.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely wedding story. Yes, simple beginning, happy life.
DeleteLovely wedding photo! I see from your comment to Pixie that a huge stressful event was about to happen -- glad everything turned out okay but how awful that must have been at the time!
ReplyDeleteYes. And a lot more things. But we managed.
DeleteI always wonder if women cry at weddings because they know the promises being made so blithely will be far more far-reaching and difficult than a bride and bridegroom can imagine. Probably yes, a good thing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful picture of a beautiful couple. Glen and I planned our wedding on a Monday, got married on a Thursday. And it was a beautiful little wedding! Friend-made, love-filled.
With the wisdom of age, you realize het marriage is designed to suit men. Particularly in religious groups. It works for some women.
Deleteinteresting view (that I share) - and was shocked when my partner of 20 years made some throwaway comment about 'signing the piece of paper' (in his mind it apparently served as a serious marriage proposal) because he didn't want to die single. What the....? As if these years were a record of nothing.
DeleteVery nice wedding photo. One to cherish for sure. I agree, glad everything turned out OK. Wishing you a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a innocent image.
DeleteCongrats on your 63rd although all is not how you would want it to be.
ReplyDeleteI don't eat breakfast either, except for occasional late ones out, but they are really brunches. But I would still accept a granola bar. Some people are silly. Not me or you, of course.
I think he may have wanted not to deprive me, come to think of it.
DeleteHappy Anniversary! Beautiful couple
ReplyDeleteMay
Thank you.
DeleteThanks for sharing the photo of your special day, Boud. Most of the things might have been borrowed, but the memories are special. Luckily, we missed out on waking up to any more snow, but more is forecast later this week 😟
ReplyDeleteAlmost every item in the picture was a gift! I treasure all of them.
DeleteYou both look so young! A lovely couple!
ReplyDeleteWe were young - he 31, I 24. About to cross the Atlantic with two suitcases and a box of books, to a new life where we knew no one. I look back in amazement at our nerve!
DeleteYour babies. And how beautiful you are.
ReplyDeleteLife was simpler, and celebrations were smaller. But I think that made the actual even so much more the centre of it all.
Now weddings are like full blown media circuses. The amount you of time, money and resources is just mind boggling.
Our entire wedding party is in one group picture! About 30 people. It was a nice wedding. Also very frugal.
Delete'Real' presidents! Are you sure it hasn't been renamed yet?
ReplyDeleteStick around!
DeleteA great photo, Boud. Wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteThank you for sharing that photo.
ReplyDeleteIt surprises me now to see how we looked then.
DeleteOur younger selves rarely resemble our older selves.
ReplyDeleteWhat an anniversary - my parents are approaching their 61st this year
