Figure Four has arrived

Here's the doings at the last stage of making Figure Four

The fabric is a piece of transparent polyester I dyed and embroidered as a framed hanging, and exhibited in a fiber arts solo some years ago.

I cut out the most relevant passage, in color and design to work with the figure.

You see it here, attached, with the colors and stitch directions working pretty well with the figure.

And here's the figure, 14" tall

The cloak is two pieces of silk organza printed with images of artworks I'd made and scanned.

The base is a piece cut out of the background  the paper shapes assemblage was on. Just sawed it off.

I'm glad it's done. Very tricky stitching paper to fabric and wiring the support and rhe figure together. I did a bit of stitching with wire, too.

I have an idea for the next, fifth, figure. I think this series might be six figures in all. Unless I keep getting ideas. Each one seems to trigger the next.

You really have to use a lot of skills with this sort of work! Now I'm going to do a bit of undemanding napkin hemming.

Also rest a bit. I'm a bit wobbly from the fall, just nervous, but I did navigate the stairs and forced myself to go to the mailbox so it wouldn't get hard to do.

And I found why I fell. I'd evidently put my weight on the foot before it was properly over the step, which knocked off the shoe, and I lost my balance. So today I planted my foot firmly on the step, then stepped up, and it worked. Good to learn how to do steps. About time.

  1. This is going to be such an interesting figure.
As to steps- it's good that you got back on the horse that threw you.

    1. That was my thinking. So easy to start avoiding.

  2. This doll is beautiful and very unique! She almost has an oriental look to her. You will have quite a series of dolls here when they tell you you are done. I enjoy projects that use multiple skills.

I hope you are not too sore. It's good you figured out what happened so you will know how to prevent it in the future. My husband has balance problems and I tend to watch his feet all the time when we go out but after my fall I guess I need to watch his feet and mine. You be careful and feel better!

    1. Thank you. I made myself work today so as not to lie about, thinking about my bruises.

  4. I think this doll is probably my favourite (to date, anyway). She reminds me somewhat of my Shudayra who was the result of a round robin (if you want to see her you can look here....https://magpiesmumblings.blogspot.com/2015/08/more-looking-back.html ). She is the only doll of the ones I've made, or had a part in making, that I have kept.
Glad you figured out how to do steps.... (take care!)

    3. After many attempts I did get a link to open, yay. This happens with tablets and Android phones, luck of the draw. anyway, that's an interesting figure. Did you make the doll that started out? What size is she? Interesting concept, a collaborative project. I've done travelling artist books that way, always fun to see other people's takes.

    4. Yes, I made the 'nekkid' doll figure and then it went on to several different people in the group who added things to her. The doll (including horse) measures about 17" tall. The person who created the horse used a plastic dollar store toy horse and covered it with papier mache. Alas no more collaborations like this because the postage costs are so high. Stay tuned - I might do a blog post about the doll again next week and try to show more details.

  5. I do like this one. and yeah, steps can be tricky. there are stairs at SHARE to the upstairs storage area and depending on how much I have in my hands I take them one at a time, both feet on each step.

  6. This has been quite the progression from doll to figure.
Try that link again. It's OK for me, and well worth a look.

    1. Yes. Less and less physical body, more and more references to other works.

  8. She looks a bit "crone" like - like she is heading for the secret cottage in the woods. Be careful about steps - sometimes they just jump around!
