Misfits and Two Proud Walkers

Yesterday I asked on Freecycle if anyone had a walker, because it turns out I need not only  the downstairs one I already have from HP, but another for upstairs. I used to have a second one and donated it years ago.

Within minutes I had not just an offer, but a choice! With wheels or rubber feet. And the Freecycler said he'd deliver it today because they were going to be in the area on their way somewhere. So here it is

And here's my benefactor getting in his car ready to help someone else

When I thanked him he said, nah, it's what I do!

And I made a couple of just-in-time discoveries. One is that the cortisone shot would put a three month delay on surgery, one that the bone density shot would put a six month delay. Good thing I hadn't had either yet. One scheduled next week, one the week after.

I see the surgeon Monday,  to get surgery scheduling started, and have him confirm whether I have to bag one shot, postpone the other. The bone density doctor's nurse tells me the shot can usually be postponed safely, wants me to talk again after I see the surgeon.

It's all go. My new normal. I feel like a traffic cop directing all these medical and surgical threads.

Meanwhile Kareem brought the Misfits box, and took away the returns

Small order this week. The "mystery color" chard turns out to be plain green this time. Tofu for crunchy sticks, because I liked that a lot, with a dipping sauce. Apples for midmornings, berries with the yogurt already in the fridge for desserts, sardines because it's been ages.

Today I was a bit tired, after the doings of a couple of days, but anyway I changed the bed, did two loads of laundry, put everything away compulsively, did my PT work like a model patient, even cleaned and changed the filters on my hearing aids (!) and got into a Hamish Macbeth.

Tonight I'm making a chickpea tuna salad. I might make flatbread since I'm all out of bread. I always need some form of bread around.

Happy day everyone, when in doubt I overdo. But you don't have to.

Billie Takes a Stand: don't mess with me, mean people, you know who you are, making my food more expensive. I will bite your ankle.

  2. Freecycle for the win once again! That's wonderful.
I wish you luck in navigating all the intricate parts of medical care. So much of it you have to figure out for yourself so it's good that you're well versed in doing research.

    1. There's a lot taken for granted by healthcare people. I had given them the medication list, but nobody had asked about the shot schedule.

  3. I know how much work and research it takes to get all the ducks in a row for medical stuff. Well done!

  4. Yes, there are some very nice people in our world. When I needed a medical bed for Mr. M. the Humane Society thrift store gave me on and set it up for me. They said it was free but I donated for the dogs. Good luck on your surgery.

  5. Wow! That was fast on the walker--and delivered, too!! So nice!
Things seem to be falling into place.
You did a lot. Time to relax and read Hamish. :)

  6. So glad you figured out about the shots before you tried to schedule. That would have been difficult to say the least. And the walker? Terrific! There are so many good people among us.
    Flatbread sounds good to me.

    1. I've had mostly good experience with free cycle. This was the latest.

  8. The speed at which your surgery is happening makes me just a bit envious.

    1. It's not even scheduled yet. I'm doing the preliminaries.

    2. Mine was scheduled right away. They said they will call me to begin preliminaries when it is time. I'm going to guess that they do ours that way because the ops are scheduled so far ahead that doing the preliminaries first would be useless.

    3. I mean homecare preliminaries. On Monday I hope I'll know my date. I'm just taking care of what I can now, so as not to be rushed if I get an early date.

    4. Oh. I see. My preliminaries will be fixing meals ahead that can just come out of the freezer. I will probably just use a physical therapist right here in town. Mostly, though, I expect that Tim and I will do what we've always done: muddle through on our own.

  9. Glad you got another walker. They don't do stairs well!

  10. Yay for Freestyle! And for misfits.
Until you mentioned it, I forgot that the bone density shot needs to stop before a surgery. I read that in the instructions. So many and, ifs and buts.

  11. I'd never heard of it at all. I was just checking in case. I've been getting the shots for years, and don't remember any warnings about surgery.

  12. Good thing you found out about the delaying effects of those shots before you got them!

  14. You need this but if you do that then you can't do this. Yes, this sounds like a familiar path. And what you do when you're a bit tired puts most of us to shame.

    1. The do this no don't is probably from too many unconnected medics not seeing all the moving parts. You have to be alert. I don't know how people manage if they don't think of these questions.
I think the tiredness was mental, mainly. Social exhaustion from phoning, too.

  15. You seem to be on top of this. I gave away all of my father's aids, walkers, wheel chair, etc. I kept his cane, which I am glad of. I probably should have kept it all. You go, Billie!

    1. At the time you probably did the right thing about the equipment. Other people have got help from it. In my case I was already in my seventies, so it was not unlikely that I'd need it at some point.

  16. Thank goodness you found out about delaying those shots. Hopefully, your surgery will be soon. I have a stockpile of the family's medical equipment in my basement that I share with my brothers and sister! We are all old!

  17. Perhaps a silly question, but can you tell me how you interact with Freecycle? I used to be part of a "free" group on Facebook, but I haven't been on there since before Nov 5. I know you aren't on FB, so I'm wondering how you access the group? I looked online, and perhaps it's via the website or maybe there's an app? I have some specialized items to give away that aren't all that well-suited for just dropping off at our Goodwill. Thank you!

    1. Not silly at all. In fact I've edited the current post to add in explanation s about using Freecycle. You can Google on Freecycle your home town to see if there's a local group.
