Crochet success, pond walk, and third party Freecycle

Beautiful morning, and I was out early, walking, and feeling more energy. It's a particularly rugged allergy season and I have to take all kinds of drops and compresses and pills, to cope with terminally swollen itchy eyes and sneezing. I try to take as little as I can manage without, because it drags me down. It's a balance.

Anyway today's better and I had a great walk without wanting to lie down on the way back.

There were many rings on the surface, turtles and frogs, also water striders. And you may detect a golf ball in the water.

When I was taking out the garbage I spotted this perfectly good stuff left there. Probably wouldn't fit on the truck, or maybe too expensive to move it.

So I put a picture on Freecycle as a drive by, giving location and explaining it's not mine.

But chances are I'll get emails asking me various questions and requesting I hold it, and other things people think up.

I'll disregard them, not get into an email exchange. I've done my bit and it's going to rain so I urged anyone interested to get over soon.

While I was in Freecycle I saw this wanted post

Hm. Maybe the gilded look is spreading beyond Washington? Ew.

I have turned a corner with the crochet.

I now know what I'm doing. That broad bit at the bottom wraps around the back of the heel, and will be stitched. Now I'm working the sole of the foot.

It wasn't only the stitch that was tough, but doing it with accommodations for what is now functionally a partly disabled hand.

This work isn't pretty but it will work as a proof of concept and a template for a future project. I'm very pleased with what I've learned here.

And look what came in the mail. Comic relief.

This cracked me up. An exclusive club I don't qualify for! Could they be more oblivious of people's feelings? Medics certainly have a different way of seeing the world. I'm guessing it's my age range that's expected to be falling to bits.

Also my age range is probably why I'm getting many many offers to take the condo off my hands. For cash. Fast. Easy. Three texts and calls just today.

On the other hand, my doctor's office called this afternoon and announced that the recent blood work is normal. So there!

In other good news: in NJ as of today it is illegal for stores to use variable pricing. That's where their surveillance shows your personal shopping information and charges different customers different prices for the same product.  So yay us.

And, because of cyclobadstuff, I did check with Misfits about sourcing of produce and they tell me their records show no instances of involvement with the sus sources. So far so good. I'm still cooking what I can't peel though.

Today's reading, among other books, is this gripping story, historical fiction, of a young girl in a Venice orphanage, abandoned at birth by a young woman who couldn't keep her.

The orphanage has a music program, and after flute, piano and voice, she turns out to be a violin prodigy who gets Vivaldi as her teacher.

It's very well written, understanding synaesthesia and its relationship to music and the drive of a child born to play. I'm liking this.

Happy day everyone, my new neighbor just showed up to borrow my stepladder, which just arrived back from Gary! Her (and his) granddaughter is available to help her hang drapes so she's seizing the day.

  1. Everything is so green and lush. You won't see that here in midsummer.

  3. I just put The Instrumentalist on hold. Thanks for the review - it sounds great.

Your clean air and lush greenness is like a dream. We're now marinating in the kind of smoke you had a month ago, and going stir-crazy.

Congratulations on crochet progress. I hope this will work for you. Preserve those hands as much as you can.

    1. That bad air is miserable, and I hope it clears up soon.
I'm hopeful about the crochet. If not, I'll keep looking.
Let me know what you think of The Instrumentalist when you get it.

  4. Variable pricing based on customer information?? Thank goodness that's now illegal and should be illegal everywhere! I've never heard of such a thing before.

    1. It's a new idea that was introduced stealthily, and states are catching on and looking at legislation. But watch out, it could happen in Australia too.

  5. If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't even have noticed that golf ball, but there it is!

    1. I'm tuned in to random golf balls, and often toss them into the course when I find them out of bounds. This one I left.

  7. You are a conscientious neighbour! That storyline sounds familiar but I don't recognise the title.

  8. This morning I felt a tiny cool breeze. It was heavenly. Then it left. Perhaps it is on its way to you!
I am hoping that need for gilded decor is coming from a prop master.

    1. What cracks me up about it is that it's posted to the Princeton site, home of old money who shudder at gilded doodads! People often mistake wealth for showiness.

  9. Congrats on the progress with your crocheting. When I mentioned sewing socks, I was thinking that you could use old clothes for the fabric - things you don't wear anymore or that people are free cycling.
I got out for a walk early today, too, and the weather was just right.

  10. I've never heard of "variable pricing." That DOES sound like a racket!

I tried to post something like that on Freecycle once -- an item I saw on the sidewalk not far from me -- and my post was removed. The moderator said I had to have the item in my possession to post it, so multiple people wouldn't show up for it. "We've had fights break out over that sort of thing," she said. (!)

    1. That's hilarious about the drive by posting. Here they're not unusual, and as far as I know, no fights have ensued. Usually people aren't coming far anyway, and they take their chances.
The pricing idea is the latest marketing gouge by people like the W store, over whose threshold I won't go anyway, human rights abuses all round. But they may be stopped in their tracks now that word's out.

  12. Variable pricing? What next will they come up with to milk consumers out of their hard-earned money. I know that here they issue cards to low-income families that entitle them to buy groceries at a lesser cost...all very discreet at the checkout. I have no problem with that but changing the pricing for the rest of us is just plain highway robbery.
As a little side note (and totally off topic!) I have begun researching a new cell phone and was surprised to learn that they are now marketing what they're calling 'dumbphones' (vs. smartphones). Basically the old flip phones with a few additional bells and whistles. There was a bit on the news last week about a movement amongst young people to go that route because they're fed up with being 'connected' all the time and the fact that big brother is watching. I'm feeling a definite attack of 'dumb' coming on.

    1. My son the techie has always had a flip phone, nowadays with more features, but not conducive to time online. I think there's a market out there, and not just among older people.

    2. Oddly enough, in my research on cell phones, I have discovered that they are actually called 'dumbphones' and there's a whole bunch of them available. Who knew?!
