I baked a sweet potato, raisin walnut cake for Handsome Son's visit on Wednesday, and we had a nice time on the deck, with tea and cake. He agreed we always need cake and offered to pick up any ingredients I might need!
I explained I usually have ingredients, it's the energy that runs short sometimes. So I saved some in the freezer, and after we'd enjoyed some and I'd had a bit for breakfast, we are here
Last night I found a great old black and white Alec Guinness movie with Joan Greenwood, on YouTube, highly recommend. I think I may have seen it decades ago, some dialogue familiar, and it's worth a second look.
It's a great rendition of Father Brown and I kindly overlooked the production errors such as Father Brown wearing the soutane in England, it's illegal, and other things, but Guinness is so good, nevermind.
I have triumphed over the socks, now done. I started knitting early this morning, while listening to a Yale lecture on Islam, very good presenter, Paul Freedman.
Anyway here's the complete pair on my battered old feet and off
I even had yarn to spare, to my surprise. Anyway I was so pleased that I finished a crocheted whistle lanyard
And I'm Freecycling for Handsome Son who is trying to get away from packrat mode, so this helps and it's much easier for me to do than him.
Weekends are good for freecycling, so I'm hopeful. There are three shirts here, and I kept two for me. They're in good shape but are way too large for him now. For me they're practically dresses, but maybe nightwear.
Happy day everyone, we have no idea yet when we will celebrate Easter, whatever day works, when he gets his weekly schedule tomorrow. Normally he works Sundays, but we'll see.
Still there, we'll get it clean again
That cake sounds very interesting and good. Healthy, too, for a cake. We watched that Father Brown film the last time I visited my Canadian friend!
ReplyDeleteAs cake goes, it's good, though I don't exactly think cake is health food. And, as cake goes, it went.
DeleteFor all the pain in the butt that knitting those socks gave you, they did turn out nice!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, they're okay, and feel nice in action.
DeleteI'm sure you're glad the socks are done and you won't have to look at that pattern again:)
ReplyDeleteI made cakes this morning and a brownie. The cakes went in the freezer, the brownie in my tummy.
Have a lovely weekend and Easter meal with your son. I actually bought a ham this year, for the first time in forever.
I'm pleased they came out well, and pleased they're done. I do like cake in the freezer for when you really need cake, quick.
DeleteI expect Handsome Son will show up with deli ham or something, he's the meat man. I think it will be good with the baked pasta, come to think of it. Unless he brings something else. It's all good.
Congratulations on being a person who finishes things!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I do finish things, probably not wanting anything to get the better of me. A certain amount of vanity there
DeleteLooks like that cake was delicious! Congrats on finishing the socks!
ReplyDeleteWe tested the cake as proof of concept, several times. And I plunged into the socks early before I could get put off. That worked.
DeleteGlad you had time to spend with your Son. The socks look great. Happy Easter to you.
ReplyDeleteIt was a nice afternoon. He's local and I know I'm lucky.
DeleteCongratulations on winning the battle of the socks. It's been edge of the seat viewing. ;)
ReplyDeleteThey are quite nice though.
They came out well, but you should have heard the soundtrack!
DeleteSo there’s another Father Brown apart from the silly current tv show? Sorry to put it that way if it’s a fave of yours, but I imagine that even people who like it admit it is silly.
ReplyDeleteThis is a freestanding excellent movie. I haven't had TV for 15 years, so I don't know the series you're mentioning. Sounds as if I may not be missing much!
DeleteThat is one demolished cake - well done, Boud and HS! And well done on sock completion (the air was blue all the way over to here)!
ReplyDeleteChris from Boise
I just had to get it done! I have now treated myself to a new small rigid heddle, for back strap weaving.
DeleteYou are fortunate to have your son living nearby. There's comfort in that. Enjoy your Easter, whenever it happens, and may it be peaceful and happy.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see him regularly, to keep up our friendship. I know a lot of people whose adult children live thousands of miles away.
DeleteI don't seem to have much success when I try freecycle. You certainly have the knack.
ReplyDeleteWe also have a big enough community of like minded people. That helps.
DeleteAnything that Alec Guinness acted in...The Man in the White Suit ...the one where he played many members of the same family (can't remember tbe film's name) so much produced by the Ealing Studios
ReplyDeleteKind Hearts and Coronets! I think Joan Greenwood was in that too, playing Sibella. The Lavender Hill Mob, too, so many great comedies. The cast is always great, love when Sid James is on.
DeleteI must have missed the original post about this particular sock pattern. It wasn't that Yankee pattern, was it?
ReplyDeleteVery likely. It's now stuffed in among a lot of patterns I never use, so I can't check. But it's done now, all good.
DeleteCongratulations! You won the game of yarn chicken and the socks turned out beautifully. Someone will really love them.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to you and Handsome Son (oh, and Gary too)
Thank you, I certainly hope whoever gets them likes them! Thank you for the Easter wishes.
DeleteI don't bake much in the way of desserts anymore but last night I made some very simple banana oat bran muffins and they were somehow just right. Today I'll be making the dough for angel biscuits for tomorrow's get-together meal.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a thoughtful mother. I know HS does a lot for you but you return the favors.
Your baking sounds great. HS and I are a good team these days.
DeleteVery sorry to read that your energy is low. Hope it picks up soon. Love using sweet potatoes and yams in bakes. Delightful.
ReplyDeleteEnergy's fine just now, so I was able to bake. But sometimes not so much. I was just dampening his expectations!
DeleteMystified, I Googled whether or not the soutane is illegal in the UK. The consensus seems to be that while some centuries-old laws may prohibit it, they are not enforced, and in fact modern religious leaders often wear it. "There is no modern criminal law prohibiting the wearing of religious dress in public, including the soutane," says the helpful but possibly flawed AI overview. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThere are many laws still on the books prohibiting Catholic observances of all kinds, and back when the movie was made, the Catholic clergy was very aware that they would hear about it if they eg appeared on the street other than in a prescribed dark suit. Or were even seen outside the church in vestments.
DeleteIf the parish needed anything from the town council they knew they'd be scrutinized. There's more than one way to enforce a law! For instance, in wartime all church railings were requisitioned for use in munitions. After the war protestant churches only, not Catholic in our town, had them restored. On the grounds that only church of England buildings were entitled to them, as the established religion.
I could go on, but will refrain. I gather that the arrival, in recent times, of more Muslims has, sadly, taken some of the heat off the Catholic population. Catholic clergy can still not perform a legal marriage, still need the registrar to sign off and make it legal. There's more. Don't get me started! Well, maybe you did!
I like to watch Father Brown on my local PBS station but I didn't realize there was an old series too. It's nice that you can spend time with your son. I'm so lucky to have my oldest son living with me.
ReplyDeleteThere was a not very good TV series with Kenneth More ages ago. I think the Guinness movie is much better, more intelligently understood. And I think I'll see if I can find more Guinness movies now.
DeleteRegarding your sock trial, I saw this on a quilter's blog one day: "I don’t know who needs to hear this, but… "You’re a terrific quilter. The fabric really should’ve tried harder!"" Something about it just really tickles my funny bone. I must've read it at least several months ago, and I keep going back to my screenshot of it for a good chortle now and then. Good job on the Freecycling for HS -- helping multiple people at once with that job! And now I'm going to find an Alec Guinness movie that I can watch later today, so thanks for that idea.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the socks and I emerged intact, even with yarn left, very surprising. I like free cycling, people are so happy with free things, just for the trouble of picking up.
DeleteWell done on the socks - perhaps you should freecycle all the patterns you won't reuse? And I wonder if the recipient of the socks know what truly unique one-offs they are.
ReplyDeleteThat winnowing is yet to happen, but it's planned, yes. The person who'll get the socks has a bit more to worry about!
DeleteI also made a loaf cake this week after searching for a recipe with applesauce, sour cream and lemon and found one that also included oatmeal. It seemed unusual but was a bit hit at our weekly dominoes gathering, soma keeper. Sweet potato cake sounds wonderful and dried cranberries would be a good addition. Glad you and HS enjoyed yours and it may be a future bake for me. Those socks look comfy.
ReplyDeleteIt's banana bread with sweet potato subbed for banana. Yes, dried cranberries would be good, very autumnal!
