New gloves and a gift pattern

I've been creating a new fingerless glove pattern with a different method. It's interesting to work and I've tried it out.

Here's the sample. I worked the body in Tunisian crochet simple stitch, and the wrist in knitted 2x2 rib. You create a rectangle, as in the top picture, then fold it over, stitch it up, leaving a gap for the thumb.  As you see, simple and it works.

Anyway, if you're interested in trying it, here's the how to.

Tunisian crochet hook size I (eye), chain 17. Then proceed, using simple stitch, for 37 rows. Then with size 7 knitting needles, pick up the stitches from the edge of the long side, 37, and knit 2x2 rib for 12 rows. At one end there will be an extra stitch, which is handy when you stitch up the side.

You try it on to determine where to place the thumb opening. That's it.

I showed this on another platform today and someone instantly wanted to buy a pair. Such innocence. The cost at a reasonable hourly return, would stagger someone used to buying commercially produced gloves. So I encouraged her to try making them. It's pretty simple.

So there you are. You could knit the whole thing, too, if Tunisian crochet isn't in your repertoire. It gives a lovely firm hard wearing fabric though, so it's worth trying.

Because it's only 17 stitches you can use any hook with a long enough shaft to fit the stitches, no need for a large official Tunisian hook.

In fact I created this design because I couldn't be bothered to wait till my set of hooks arrives. Turns out it's a really nice design which I'll repeat. I'm now working on the second glove of the pair.

Enjoy your gift pattern. That makes me feel so important, like a real designer...

In other news, it seems that we aging people are currently sharing falling down stories, or getting down on purpose and finding we can't get up again.

I have precautions in place. Like Andrew, I have a daily text exchange early in the morning. Mine is with my son who lives near. If I don't respond, sometimes  only a technical thing, he messages by Skype. No response by a certain agreed on time, and he will either come over or if he's too far away, alert a neighbor.

My phone is on me literally all the time. It's never in a different room. When I shower it's within reach, and overnight it charges next to the bed, still in reach.

Best I can do! I do have neighbors who might eventually check if I don't seem active, sometimes they've been known to panic and run about the house to find me, when I'm only out walking!!

I do walk regularly and exercise with weights and stretches, all that, just to keep as agile (!) as I can.

I walked today with Carol Cane, not too far, but it's so good to get out and sniff the cold outdoor air. Today there were flocks of juncoes flying ahead of me, happy band. And I found a handy support thing for plants, just right for one of my tall houseplants, just tossed in the trees.

Happy day everyone, try to stay as vertical as you're designed to be!

  1. Yes, I've, or rather my 'dead in bed' neighbour have had some tech issues with the 8.30 sms. Step 2 comes into play and I called her phone.
    Just keep moving and walking.

    1. Yes, about having a step two, that's good. Moving is, too.

  2. When my mother died, her next-door neighbor came home from work at 9 at night and saw her NYTimes still sitting outside her door. He grabbed the keys and found her. At my mother’s funeral, my cousin told me her uncle had died the day before. His neighbor saw his NYTimes sitting outside his door late in the day! My cousin said, she was going to immediately re-up her subscription to the NYTimes.

  3. You have a good plan in place. Me? not so much. But I don't live alone and I can yell and she has good ears. But can she yell and do I have good ears?

  4. I have to start carrying my phone. I like your plan with HS. You always inspire me, Boud.

    1. It's a lovely color mix. A bit splitty to work with, but the wearer won't know that.

  6. Yay, you, for a new design!
Oh, I remember those days of the commercials for that alert thing where the poor elderly person calls out, "Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!"
    We found them so amusing.
Not so much anymore. At all.

    1. When you're younger it's hard to believe a person can't get up. You get people assuming staying fit will fix it. It doesn't work that way.

  7. Carrying your phone everywhere is a good idea. Connecting with your son every morning is also good but might I suggest an additional check in at night. I had that system with a friend and it was so fortunate that we did because one morning she didn't call and I went over and found her lying on the floor. She'd fallen and couldn't get herself up. She had one of those personal alarms but was so upset that she never thought to push it.

  8. Gorgeous colour! I've just started crocheting again and discovered it's not like riding a bike - you do forget, at least I have. I'll grit my teeth, watch some videos and persevere.

    1. I find with fiberarts I usually have to review before I can get going again, no matter how many hours I've spent in the past.

  9. The cartoon got a laugh out of me! I have poor balance, so this is an issue for me. Not living alone makes it less so, but anything can happen. I can get up, so unless I'm injured to the point I wouldn't be able, I am still good on that front. My mother died sitting in her chair. The neighbor brought her garbage container from the road and went to the door, which was the screen door, locked. She could see her and called 911. Living rural means it could be a very long time before anyone found either one of us. Something to think about.

    1. Why not a daily text exchange with your son? Or the police department? Some of them have that check-in program.

    2. I'd rather not go there with my son. He had us in assisted living, in his mind, several years ago, when we were both fit as fiddles. If I were to do this it would probably be Bill.

  10. Congrats on the beautiful design! My mom had an agreement with one of her friends to text each other every morning. They used to just text "OK."

    1. That seems adequate. My son usually seizes the opportunity to slide in advice, such as " keep warm" "stay hydrated"!! And he tactfully reminds me of the day..

    2. HS is a very thoughtful lad. Especially with the 'day' reminder. Chris from Boise

  11. Lovely colour yarn in the mitt. Do you stitch between the fingers? My gran used to crochet some loops for the fingers to ensure they didn't creep back from covering the knuckles.

    1. No, this design stays put, because the thumb in the opening anchors it in place.

  12. I’ve made gloves like that. But either I knitted it or basic crochet. I’ve been thinking is a simple enough project that i could use them to practice cables. I think that’s what they’re called

  14. Beautiful and I like your plan and the phone at all times. I'm glad you had a good walk.

  15. I carry my phone at all times. We wear buttons to summon help if we fall, but twice I've been down and the call was not answered. I resurrected myself both times, and have kept the phone at hand ever since.

    1. Very wise. Also on your phone you have choices about who to call, depending on what happened.
