Poinsettia and friends

The poinsettia caught a few early morning rays Friday

With shadows cast by the ponytail palm.

The slippers are finished and in action, great insulation against cold floors.

And I've been doing a casual granny square or two with the audiobook of Anna of the Five Towns.

I've always like Arnold Bennett since I read Riceyman Steps as a teen. There's a kind of atmosphere about his words that I think you either catch or you don't.  I'm not sure whether it lends itself to listening, though.

Happy day everyone, online with friends Friday evening, and I think I'll return to the Friday knitting group in the New Year.

  1. It's a bit strange that you can have poinsettias at the same time as we have them. Ours can last a couple of month in colour. I have no idea if they are cold weather plants or warm weather plants.

    1. That's odd. Here we see them in winter as seasonal plants. They last just like any houseplants, but it takes special treatment to bring back the red leaves. I just keep them as a green houseplant.

  2. Have you ever seen the pattern for Granny square slippers? It's fun to make but a bit of a challenge to sew up.

    1. That's one granny square idea I hadn't seen.

  3. I hope the online chat made everyone happy. We have one tomorrow with our nephew and his wife, and that’s always uplifting. I love shadow photos.

    1. The group is always nice, yes. And shadow pictures are a favorite of mine, as you may have noticed.

  4. Listening to a book while 'doing something' with one's hands is time well spent.

  5. Poinsettias are a staple of the season, and they last long too.

    1. I was just thinking of getting one, when I was given this, very timely.

  6. Arnold Bennett is an author who is unknown to me, so I read his Wikipedia page. I wonder why his novels don't seem to have been filmed yet by the British historical drama industry? Or perhaps they have been, but Wikipedia just didn't say.

    1. The picture I used is a still from the BBC tv series. Yes, he's been "done". He never seemed to catch fire like the much less talented Forster etc later. Probably not as well connected, the publishing world being an old boys network.

    2. He was very popular in his time, but socially seen as "not our kind" by the elite, such as Virginia Woolf. So his later name is not as well known.

  7. I have a love/dislike thing for poinsettias. I love them over the Christmas season but by the time they start losing their colour well into January I'm done. Then I end up wrestling with throwing out a 'perfectly good plant' that I end up not liking. I did buy one this year because they are so beautiful but we'll see how long it lasts.

    1. I hear you! But I'm fine with it when it's green. I haven't managed to get them to live long though, probably because they're forced in time for Christmas and the poor things are worn out. Aren't we all..

  8. If I remember right, poinsettias used to grow outside in our yard in central Florida. They were in a protected area and did quite well.

    1. Right climate. I believe they're native to south America. We're asking a lot of them in the North.

    2. We had one in our yard in Florida too. It got quite big until one of the hard freezes in the early '80s killed it.

  9. I can't have poinsettias anymore because I have two plant eating cats. I never was able to keep the alive after they stopped blooming. But then, I'm not good with house plants.

    1. I think it might not have been you so much as the previous treatment they'd received to make them red at the right time.

  10. I didn't get a poinsettia this year so thanks for sharing yours. I kind of miss it!

  11. The poinsettia with shadows photo is particularly nice. A rainy weekend (hooray!!!) here. Jigsaw puzzle in play.

  12. Rain at last. You need that to begin to catch up. My jigsaw puzzle is going verrrrrry slowly.

  13. What a pretty poinsetta. Every year I tell myself I'm going to sprout some seasonal bulb or other for the holiday season, and anymore I forget until the season is nearly over. Hmmm... maybe I can find some bulbs on sale at this time of year. I should look the next time I go out. Blooms in January would be nice.

    1. Blooms in January are lovely, so welcome in a down sort of time. I once or twice had an amaryllis but like you often forget till too late!
