Started early, got worse, then better, then worse again

So this was the morning start, when it seemed like a straightforward job.

From there, things deteriorated. Sudden spurting of water up, despite house water shut off, faucets open, frantic packing with towels.  Water got through to the living room ceiling despite all.

Then two shopping trips to get the right hose, despite the labels indicating otherwise, reinforcement from the neighbor across the street worried that I might be in trouble.

Couldn't do much, no water, one working toilet fortunately, no planned shower, no bread baking, no dishes. Finally nearly five pm, done, no leaks, water turned back on.

When I tried to do dishes, the newly turned -on water jetted straight out and soaked me, oh well. Air in the pipes probably.

I did a big laundry, all the towels we'd soaked trying to stem the flooding.  Then finally I baked a beautiful large loaf of oatmeal and whole wheat.

Here's a shot showing you the crumb. Nice texture.

This will cut up into four loaves, solving the breadbag situation and the expense, together.  It smells wonderful, too. It's been a while since I was up for baking bread and I'm glad I did it.

I did stockpile a few pounds of whole-wheat flour in the freezer because who knows.

So here we are. Not the day any of us had planned. Gary is trying to get away to the Superbowl, among all this.

One lovely interlude when his daughter, with her youngest, came to visit, lovely baby, so smart, not even a year old yet, and so cool!

That's where we are today, mixed day with lovely things among the other things.

Happy day everyone, remember the shakuhachi effect, translation: it's all good.

I remembered this when I found this, this morning, the pedestal broken. I now need to replace the toilet.

Now I do need the plumber.  I left a message for him.

    1. Oh dear goddess! That’s enough! (I can’t get hot water in my shower again. Time to move.)

  2. Oh my, that is NOT the way one wants to spend the day! Hopefully, it wasn't freezing cold out. The bread is absolutely beautiful. A lovely way to top of an otherwise unexpected day.

  4. A crummy day eventually led to actual crumbs. Plumbing is right up there with car troubles. Actually it is worse.

    1. Thinking it's resolved, and relaxing, and then finding it's not, is a real kick in the teeth.

    1. It's very good to have a bread supply in the house. It's not hard to do, but I get reluctant.

  9. Water issues in the house are dreadful. Glad to hear the issue is resolved. The bread was a nice diversion as was the little sweetie! Have a great day, Boud.

  10. Gary is a wonder and so willing to tackle jobs that most people wouldn't dare. I must admit to a great deal of curiosity to know what that exactly is in the last photo and why you now need a plumber. All that upheaval and you still managed to make bread!

    1. The picture is the pedestal of the toilet which I found broken this morning. I now need to replace the toilet. I think Gary may have cracked it by over tightening the hose, and it broke .

  11. Your bread is beautiful, and nothing is better than homemade. So sorry about the rough water times and the cracked toilet. Hang in there. How wonderful to see a beautiful baby.

    Love,
    Janie

  12. Plumbing problems are never straightforward, it seems to me. And yes- they are so messy! And then of course- we don't miss our water 'til the well runs dry OR the water to the house is cut off. Amazing how many times a day we turn on the faucet.
A baby! I know you couldn't post a picture but I wish you could have.
That bread is fit, as we say sometimes around here. As in "fit to eat."

    1. The baby and her mom are both beautiful, but, yes, no pictures, security, privacy etc.
      The bread is a consolation.

  13. Such a mess and then just when you felt relief, a cracked toilet pedestal.
As i was reading and looking at your bread you had written exactly what I was thinking, nice texture! Let's hope today goes smoothly for you.

  15. Oh boy. That sounds like way too much excitement for my taste. Did the toilet get broken while the other plumbing problem was being fixed, or is it unrelated? I would have thought it would be really difficult to break a toilet.

    1. It's possible the hose was overtightened into the tank. Also possible the frigid water coming in overnight after the pipes had been empty of housewarmed water, found and exploded a hairline crack. That's happened in this bathroom before. It's why I have this toilet, to replace another broken one!

  16. Hope you find a good plumber. Been there for sure. Not fun. Love the bread. Oats are so fun to use as flour. We had oat, spelt and buckwheat waffles today. Delightful.

    1. I love the oat and whole wheat combo. I have a good local plumber, known him for years. But he's expensive, so Gary often does small stuff for me.

    2. I love oat flour with organic sprouted brown spelt. Love me my spelt. Glad you have a good plumber. Sometimes it's best to go to the pros. But I also get the cost involved.

  17. All of that has reminded me why I'm designing a house with only one toilet indoors no upstairs, and drains in the floors of the wet rooms. What a horror getting a wet ceiling. That bread is major consolation even if you did have to work for it.

  18. Glad it finally got resolved--whew!
    Your bread looks great!
Hope you have a quieter day. :)
