This savage feller showed up out of the ground cover, and I'd like to know what it is, if anyone can help. It's very thorny and has tendrils galore. In fact it was trying to lasso the Russian sage, which is how I found it as I was tying up the rs and got stabbed in the process.
I've pulled it out but would like an id. Not wild grape which we have around here.
Very unfriendly, probably a defense against animals.
Smilax. At least that's what it looks like. GET RID OF IT! Around here it grows like crazy.
ReplyDeleteI have! Just wondering what I'd yanked out. It's a first for me.
ReplyDeleteLooked up smilax and found it's what I know as catbriar. I've never seen it in gardens, usually in open woodlands. You can't walk through it! The thorns just imprison you.
ReplyDeleteGlad I caught it early.
briar. which I see you already know. there's several variations. we have one with thorns where the leaves are variegated. also one without thorns I call iron weed because the skinny vine is so strong.
ReplyDeleteI've never encountered this before. I appreciated reading others comments above.
ReplyDeleteLooks and sounds like a wicked plant.
I have something similar here too - and no matter what I do, it pops back up. I think the roots must be somewhere close to the center of the universe!
ReplyDeleteNever seen it before so it was interesting to read about. Sounds like one you don't want to have around.
ReplyDeleteYou're fortunate. It's a really mean spirited feller.
