Confused begonia
This plant flowers every couple of years. Usually in January, very welcome when the weather isn't.
Thats exactly right. They do what they want. I have a big angelwing I grew from a single leaf. The leaf just sat and sat. Then it started and I have to cut it back when it's taller than me. She did it her way.
My mother had one of these but I don't remember when it flowered. I always thought the leaves were so pretty and that it didn't really need flowers too.
So many varieties. This one is about 25 years old, grown from a slip I swiped in a fit of gardener's larceny.
Come to think of it, the only plant I've bought in the current collection is my 45year old ficus. Everything else is from slips or offshoots. I don't seem to think of shopping in the context of houseplants.
Th only houseplant we've ever bought was a lovely geranium, which bloomed every day for 27 years. Then it, alas, came down with a virus (?) last fall, and no amount of pruning or cossetting or starting new plants from seemingly uninfected bits could save the day. It was sad, indeed, to pitch it a month ago. All the rest of our plants are gardener larceny, as you put it.
I think real gardeners would rather swipe than buy. Even to the dangerous extent of pruning a bit in a famous herb garden in Fort Tryon park..me? No never.
There are many varieties of begonia. The summer flowering ones are different from this, I think. Anyway maybe this one has decided to throw in her lot with the summer crowd.

DeleteHmmmm - that's a bit odd. Mine bloom all spring and summer and go dormant in the winter. I think that's what plants are supposed to do???
