They're cheerful, large size ankle socks. I'll steam press them before I send them.
And in case Handsome Son visits this week, I'm making his favorite shortbread from my favorite YouTuber, Baking on a Budget.
Simple recipe as you see. Nice crisp results. I don't like making shortbread though I like eating it. It's a very dry dough you have to press together. But it came out okay.
I tested those little pieces which broke off as I was putting the batch in the oven. With an afternoon pot of tea. Pretty good.
My latest library ebook arrived, another Elly, not so sure about this one. Still police mystery, but this one involves time travel. I'll see how it goes. Not my thing, a bit woowoo.
I'm still in Small Island in book form and another Elly on Hoopla.
I'm pretty well supplied.
The weird thing about the hour change is that it works like jetlag. I keep waking up and falling asleep at weird times. In between, I'm getting the laundry, the bed changing, the garbage and recycle and the knitting and baking, so I'm not exactly out of action, come to think of it.
But I did a nice workout, strength, balance and cardio

The socks look nice and comfortable too. I only have shortbread once a year at Christmas, so buying it is easier for me.

ReplyDeleteI get very confused at the summer time switch over, but in your fall, don't you potentially get an extra hour of sleep?
I returned the time travel book, just not interesting. Yes, supposedly there's an extra hour of sleep, but when you're used to getting up,it's not always possible to sleep on. Some lucky people can.

DeleteI’ve made scones once and that was enough! Froze the butter then was grating it and it went all over the kitchen, so what a mess…and overcooked so couldn’t share, and ended up eating it all eventually. Thanks for books!

ReplyDeleteYes, they're different. Shortbread is much richer. But scones are easier to make.

ReplyDeleteHe stayed here for a couple of days after my hip surgery, but he hasn't lived in my home for getting on for forty years. He's in the same town though.

The time travel one is back in the library, too tedious, and the Last Word was okay, a lot of parallel plots and happenings going on -- the explainer at the end went on and on! But I had that in audio, a bit too slow for my taste. I think I like her best in print where I can go at my own pace.

I noticed when we were down in the more Southern part of Florida that on our last morning there when the temperature had dipped to the very low seventies or maybe even high sixties, that people were wearing jackets. Of course a lot of them are even older than me so I'm sure that makes a difference too.
I put that in for your benefit! You could mention shortbread to one of your baking relatives and I bet it would happen.

DeleteI don't like making shortbread either, but I love eating it. I have a recipe for ginger lemon shortbread that is delicious.

DeleteI'm also not one for stories involving time travel. Small Island is a book unlike anything I'd read before. I had a hard time adjusting to the speaking of some of the characters (in its written form anyway -- I suspect I would have understood it more easily/faster if I'd heard it spoken), but then I read everything else that Levy had published because I liked the book so much. You may feel quite differently, of course.
ReplyDeleteI did try it, largely because of the Windrush connection but I couldn't get on with it. Too emotionally raw for me right now. Another time, maybe. I had no trouble with the speech, having heard a lot of it in the UK. Once you get the cadence, it flows.
DeleteEmotionally raw. I know what you mean. I bought Kamala Harris' audiobook 107 Days on the day it was released (I rarely purchase books, so this was a big deal for me), and I had to stop reading/listening halfway through. Though I enjoyed hearing her tell her story, it was too much for me.
DeleteI love eating shortbread but panic when it's all fally-aparty. A friend makes the best. She even gave me her recipe but I can't make it as good as hers.

DeleteHave you read the Ruth Galloway series by Griffiths? I really enjoyed that series and I think there are 15 books and it starts with The Crossing Places (2009).

DeleteI've never cared for eating shortbread, but used to enjoy making it for my brother, who really enjoyed it and was usually limited to buying it in tins. I would make a round and poke it neatly all over with a fork and then cut it into wedges...very satisfying :) Now that I think about it, it's been decades since I made shortbread, so now maybe I would enjoy eating it.

Good shortbread is buttery. But, yes, the texture isn't for everyone. Since you have lived both in NJ and Florida, you'd know that meme so well!

DeleteCame across a recipe for a shortbread that includes dried cranberries so it's going on the 'to make for Christmas' list. When I was a kid I simply couldn't understand why anybody would want to eat something that's basically just flour, sugar and butter. Glad to say my opinion has changed.
