Car nearly done with, and beech twigs

I picked up the car Wednesday morning and got a  bill for zero dollars and zero cents. And the general checkups put every system in the green column. So all's well.

I saw the erring clerk and she looked a bit anxious, but I figured ah I'm done here, and said nothing. She was probably glad to see me leave.

Back home Handsome Son and I had some car talk and I found he was, after all, not interested in taking on my car. He's happy with his beater for now.

So I'm up for selling it and already had several offers which I'm looking at. They'll pay for quite a few rides, aside from saving on the expense of running a car.

I'll be so glad not to be responsible for keeping a car going in winter, having to clear it in snow and get it moved to allow the snowplows to clear the whole area. There's no staying in the warm in snow!

So, lovely visit with tea, then HS went off to get his COVID shot -- turns out NJ has authorized it for all ages, without a prescription, regardless of the federal age restrictions.  This is part of the northeastern coalition of states on the issue.

Later I got out for a chilly walk, feeling better than for ages, and found a few downed beech twigs to join the oak twigs

The shells whatever they're called -- if you know please say -- after the nuts fall out, are beautiful little sculptures.

I expect squirrels are helping with the nuts -- a lot of half eaten nuts everywhere. Squirrels are like nature's kids, biting one bit, then tossing for other people to clear up.

Swept the leaves off the deck and into the ground cover to shelter animals and the roots of the trees and shrubs over winter.

This week is looking up. Thursday is Misfits day. Speaking of which, the delivery day will be different when we get to Thanksgiving which is usually my delivery day.

And Handsome Son tells me he's likely to be free the week after tday to celebrate. He'll be working on the day.

It's all good! Sell the car and I'll be done with the auto world, wheee!

That's telling them, sez Billie the Pup

  1. In a nutshell, I believe the nut casing is called a nutshell.
Well maintained and low mileage cars do command a premium price. I expect yours is very low mileage. It just struck me that although we use kilometres, and people under forty wouldn't have a clue how far a mile is, we still say mileage and 'it's miles away'.

    1. I think it's similar in the uk, too, mileage still gets in there now and then.
      A nutshell! What a concept!

  2. At least you have a car in best condition for selling after its garage visit.

    1. Yes, my son said but now you've got it fixed you're selling? To me that's the best time.

  3. I am pretty sure the empty shells are just called shells. Hope you get a good price for the car.

    1. I thought shells were the outer casing of the nut itself, rather than the part that attaches to the tree. Maybe same word for both?

  4. I’ve heard beech tree “shells” called husks and copules. Had a friend who loved the trees. I sometimes, rarely, miss the convenience of a car. But love not having the headaches and expense. We can take taxis everywhere and not even take a bite out of the cost of car insurance alone.

    1. Copule sounds very likely, thank you. Here rides are expensive but no long term responsibility, which I like.

  5. I am curious about why HS wouldn’t want the better car.

  6. It sounds as though your car will soon find a new home - what a relief.

  7. It sounds like you are very happy about your decision to sell the car. It is curious that your son wouldn't want a more reliable car, but as you say, his ways are his ways.

    1. His car is reliable, and he maintains it well, and I think he wants to choose his next car himself.

  8. Good for you - being practical about giving up your car. I hope to feel that way when it is time for me to quit driving. Hope you get a good price for it as I have heard that used cars are in demand right now!

  9. How nice it will be this winter to stay warm inside and watch out your window all those other poor schmucks scraping off snow and ice from their vehicles!

  10. I believe you will feel such relief in letting go of car ownership. There is so much involved in all of that. As you well know! Be the queen and let your driver take you where you need or want to go!

  11. I wish the covid vaccinations were available to everyone over here like flu shots My children paid £100 each to get them privately. Seems crazy; lost days through covid must easily cost the economy and health services over £100 per person

    1. That's shortsighted. But I'm glad they could afford the shots and got them. It's important preventive care.

    1. It will literally be true that it was driven very few miles, by an old lady! For once it won't be a dealer fantasy.

  13. Yes, a car in snowy winter is a huge hazel. Glad you have some offers. Take care and stay warm.

  14. With the money from the sale of the car you could pay for transportation trips for a long, long time...and not have to scrape and move the car through the drifts after the snowstorms---ahhh! Sounds heavenly!

    1. Yes, that's about it. And the savings of not maintaining a car, insurance being a big deal in this state.

  17. Not having a car would save hundreds each year and so much headache.
If I lived closer to town I’d probably have sold mine by now.
    Hubby has three cars!
Apparently they all are needed for different reasons. I don’t ask. I don’t care.
So if I did sell I’d always have a car to drive. But none are as easy to drive as mine.

  18. I love bills for 0 dollars and 0 cents. I want all my bills to look that way from now on.

  19. Well done with the car. I'm sure it was a bit of a tough decision to give it up but maybe a smart one, especially if you have good transport for the main stuff.

  20. no idea what beech nuts casings are called but i agree they are elegant and interesting pieces of nature (and I'd never have dreamed of eating beech nuts until invited to do so while on a tour of a bear sanctuary - they are quite tasty, but small).

    1. They're so small I don't think they're worth the trouble. I tried a couple a while back. Very labor intensive.

  21. I can hear the relief in your voice over the car decision. I know the day is coming when we'll do the same. I am dreading having to deal with the snow around our car over the winter and have had no luck in finding an able-bodied soul willing to undertake that chore for us. Sadly we have to get it cleared so we can move the car out early in the morning to allow the big equipment to clean the parking lot. How I miss having a garage!

    1. That's exactly my issue with snow and the car and the parking lot. I won't miss that.
