Go to Monday June 7, 2010 blogpost

That's where you'll find a better account, with a terrible picture, of the Great Tin Quilt Caper and the pet care business. I had a laptop back then, so it's much wordier!

Meanwhile, back to the present, I found a dragonfly wing on the rug, probably carried in with a flower. It's surprisingly tough to handle, and I put it on a daisy in today's little bouquet.

And Misfits arrived, in the wrong colored truck, driven by Jeff, who looked like a man with a bad back today.

Picking up and carrying these boxes with heavy ice added in, is no picnic. I did feel for him. He used to hoist the box on his shoulder, but that's not happening now.

The food pantry has finally got up to accepting $ donations online, no more township losing my checks and causing extra work for the already busy pantry crew.

That kerfuffle was why I started giving food instead of $$, but I think they could make better use of money for known needs instead of donor guesswork based on their website.

So what you see here may include the last of the donations which I'd ordered before I knew about the jump into modern times. They still don't have a regular donation function, oversight, because I'd have used it.

Anyway I donated $$ and they'll still get vegetable broth and canned beans and tuna.

Envy apples, which I'll cook and maybe add in some of the blueberry jam I just made this morning,

or the nectarines I froze last week.

The yogurt is new to me, because my usual isn't available, so why not. It turns out, as I  found when I had some with blueberry jam for lunch, to be very good, lovely texture.

Yellow potatoes to parboil and later roast, to go with the chicken, all of which I'll roast at once then use as I go. Scallions to roast with chicken, too.

Olive oil, because I'm completely out, also because they don't have avocado oil at the moment which I like for baking.

Beautiful eggs, one was cracked, only the second egg casualty in five years, and they refunded me. I honorably pointed out that it's only one egg, but they refunded me for the dozen. I don't think they can subdivide, though I wouldn't mind if they did.

Bananaz for maybe banana bread, or just to eat, what a concept. The sourdough bread is a bit of a venture, they being out of all the other breads I buy.

I had an allergic reaction to sourdough many years ago, but I'll try it because I've outgrown so many allergies that I thought it's worth a try. If it's not a good idea, I've no doubt Handsome Son will take it off my hands.

So that's us today. Now for the Thursday boiling, slicing, drying, freezing, roasting procedures, followed by a lie down.

A while back, a friend, mistaking a cheerful attitude for joy, said oh that prep is as good as a party for you, you love it! I just looked at her, where to begin to describe the grudging attitude I have to food prep.. but never mind.

Happy day everyone, when I don't feel like food prep I remember I'm lucky to have it. There have been times in my life when I'd have given a lot for food like this, plenty, too.

That was when I lived on one meal a day, what I could afford. And several memorable days when all I had was oatmeal. Bad old days, let's not dwell.

  1. An allergic reaction to sourdough -- interesting. I wonder what set it off? Hopefully it has subsided. Nice dragonfly wing, though I'm sure the dragonfly was sorry to lose it. :)

    1. I wonder if an encounter with a bird caused the wing to come off. And if a dragonfly can still manage with one wing gone

  2. Having never heard of sourdough allergy, I had to look it up. Turns out it's not that unusual. I had no idea! Please try just a bit of the bread before you go all in. I figure you were already planning on that.
Loved the old post. More of your oh, so very interesting life. You have done just about a bit of it all, haven't you?

    1. I think one bite will tell me. The other bread was some supposedly famous good bread in San Francisco. It's possible I was reacting to the local yeast or something. Anyway this may work better but I'll proceed with caution.
Yes I've had, still have, an interesting life.

  3. OH! You don't enjoy the food prep? I didn't realize.

    1. I get stuck in and just do it. That's a long way from liking it. Remember your mother saying you don't have to like it, you just have to do it?

  4. I went to your old blog post and loved seeing the photo of the tin quilt! I also enjoyed reading about your pet setting business. I used to hire the same pet sitter to look after HRH when I needed to be on any trip longer than a weekend. She told me some appalling stories, like how some clients didn't even leave pet food in the house when they left, or expected her to shovel snow, or clean the house, etc. etc. She had to have a very thorough legal agreement template drawn up, detailing what her services did and did NOT include, that the clients had to read and sign before every job.

    1. Yes, I had all the rules and regs in print for clients to sign on to. I protected myself very well, largely because I'd been a small biz consultant before, and had observed a service where the owners hadn't thought of what could go wrong! I also didn't hesitate to fire abusive clients, much to their surprise!

  5. I used to donate items to our food bank. Some in the community organized a "turkey drop" in early November urging residents to purchase turkeys and donate them the second weekend. I didn't have room to purchase and refrig a turkey but my friend Pat and her brother shared their idea. Let's all send a monthly check instead. Just designate November's check for the turkey drop. Luckily I am old and still have a checkbook (they don't have an online donation option either). Once a month I write 3 checks, for the charity I work for, the food bank and my water bill (which I could pay online but there is a monthly charge for that).

  7. You have had a most interesting life. I loved reading that post from 2010 and the business with your ex?husband. You seem both practical and creative, an excellent mix. Your practicality allowing you to pursue your creative energy. I like it.
Food banks always need money to buy the goods that aren't donated and to buy things that can't be donated.

    1. I'm still having an interesting life. I agree about giving money to food banks. In the end they know their needs best. Giving actual food is a feel good for the donor, but not as useful.

  8. I used to love food prep back when I was a stay at home mum, I could work all morning getting dinner and dessert ready, clean up and have the afternoon to myself. Things changed when I went back to work and it became a chore. These days in retirement I think I would love it again if only my kitchen had a decent amount of space.

    1. Having time and space makes a big difference. Now I have time and it's better than always being rushed. I like cooking just fine, it's the grocery prep I don't like so much. I'm always glad every Thursday when all's done and away and I'm sweeping the floor and recycling the box.

  9. Hope the sourdough reaction is history. I had a friend who loved it but had a histamine reaction to it. Poor Jeff. Hope the back pain is only temporary. Not a job to be doing. The dragonfly wing is magical -- although not for the dragon fly.

    1. Jeff is an older guy, and I don't like his having to do such a physical job. In and out of the truck, driving in our erratic traffic, hauling heavy boxes, it adds up, and this hot summer has been hard. All I can do is send thanks and tips, and it's not enough.

  11. One of these days I will make it a point to go back to the beginning of your archived posts and find out more about your life. You are so wise and you've done so many things that I have never even thought of. I've put a post it note on my screen to remind me. "Check out Boud's past"! :)

    2. I don't have the file, in case you're searching, but I've no doubt some Washington desk driver does.

    1. I have to prep right away to avoid spoilage. Otherwise by the time I get to it, produce will be past it. One person takes a while!

  13. Hope you don't react to the sourdough bread. Good thing neither the RC or I are allergic because that's pretty much all we eat. I get not enjoying the prep work because I truly hate to cook. I'm blessed that I have the Resident Chef who enjoys it.
