The adopted orchid, the exterminator and the foster plants

Early Sunday I cooked an unlikely hot weather dish. Baked shells in cheese sauce. I just felt like it. Small shells, cheese sauce with a lot of sharp cheddar and feta crumbles. It's enough for several days, and might also work cold, we'll see.

But meanwhile, back at the house. One of the findings of the insurance contractor was the source of the neverending ant supply in the kitchen.

They're all over the neighborhood, constant issue. And since the neighbors on both sides have the same situation as well as termite damage, we all had the exterminator come out Sunday morning to see what's what.

The verdict, after Exterminator John's long client education on termites, their life and habits, likewise ants, is that I need exterminating to happen.

My house needs termite treatment front and back, no activity right now, but it needs to be done. And I'll get the ants treated. I don't like resorting to this, but it's them or me.

So now it's waiting for an estimate and I'll go from there. I knew there had been termites years ago, and part of the repair in the kitchen involves replacing wood anyway. We don't have the kind of termites that involve tenting. These can be treated by inserting stuff into the ground.

So one thing's under way.

This writing was interrupted by Gary dashing in to ask me to hold a wire detector thing for him in his kitchen to trace a short that was turning his lights off. He went to the circuit box and we had the usual Off now? Now? Now?  dialog until he found the right breaker.

Then yet another plant came over to stay with me while he's away. Here's the begonia, which I'd started for him long ago.

I'd top prune if it were mine, to make it bushier, but he loves its height, so I'll refrain.

And there are other visitors on the deck. I get to water them.

There's a coleus near the water bottle, which I started, gave to him rooted, he put in a pot and now it's back for a few days.

This is his plant insurance while he's away.

And the orchid his daughter gave up on has started budding, see in foreground

It's all go.

I was indoors, too hot out there.

Stitching my basket, reading Mrs Pargeter and sleeping took the afternoon.

I'd had a complete walk around the development early morning. I hope I don't take this for granted. There was a time when I really thought I was past it. Evidently not.

The only drawback of this early rising and walking is that I'm done for by about ten am.

Happy day everyone, stay calm, cool, at least that's what I'm trying for.

  1. Yeah, staying calm is something I’ve had little success with lately. I love saving other people’s discarded plants and seeing them thrive. SG does not. He’s heartless when it comes to plants. If it doesn’t look good, throw it out. We call 88 a cool day. I’d top prune that begonia, too. Glad you’ll have the ant problem resolved and won’t require tenting.

    1. Calm is escaping me these days. I don't do well in heat and feels like 90 in the evening is a bit too much, and that doesn't help! I have been known to toss plants, but not until they're clearly done for. Nature, on the other hand, thinks nothing of it.

  4. So glad you're up and "running", hope that same will be true for the car soon. Greetings from Switzerland, rain has finally set in after the heatwave, also school holidays.

    1. I'm glad you're getting relief from the heat. I don't know about running, but I'm definitely moving.

  5. You and Gary have a good symbiotic relationship. I think you will miss each other although maybe the new place is nearby.

  6. Glad you're getting the neighbors also to address the ant/termite problems. Older structures (like my apartment building) do have hidden problems sometimes. Plants look nice, and it's a good thing you can care for Gary's while he's gone. Keep cool. I have been using Melatonin to help me get to sleep...and it also helps if I want to nap...an hour later I'm rested and ready for whatever the late afternoon brings. Getting up at first light to enjoy the coolness of morning means I run out of steam. Siestas are a good idea!

    1. I don't need any help sleeping. Keeping awake is more like it. A short nap after breakfast works. My deck is crowded now with visiting plants!

  7. Home owning can be a constant worry. So many things can and do require attention. I'm glad you're getting things attended to that need it. We definitely need to do the same.

  8. We had a similar "Will you wiggle the printer wire please?" situation yesterday too. Ants are such a pain. Glad you're getting them sorted even if it does unpleasant and expensive.

  9. Ants are a problem here. They love driveway areas. The whole neighbourhood has the problem. We had them sprayed once. Nothing else works. Good luck with them. Glad you could avoid the tenting for termites.

  10. Don't you love a long-winded exterminator? I suspect they believe that all of us will find pest control as fascinating as they do.

We have that same begonia, or one very similar. We let ours get tall too!

    1. I think the pest people are seizing on a captive audience! I usually prune the top of this kind of plant, and start a new one from the pruning. Sometimes I've planted it at the base of the parent plant, to get a bushy effect.

  11. Ohhh ants they are never ending. We had them here when we first moved in. Had the exterminator come to take care of them. He wanted to come back every 3 months, ha ha ha. I got some home defense and spray that around the house every spring and I haven't seen an ant again in 18 years. I hope it is that way for you too. I love all of the plants. That makes my heart happy. Have a great day and stay cool.

  12. What will Gary do after he moves? Probably transport his plants to you. I've stopped benign early riser so I wait until afternoon to be done in.

    1. I expect he'll load up the pickup with plants for here! When you get up early the day's so long, it's amazing. But I forget early risers are early to retire at night, too. I've been up late and rising early.

  13. When guests were leaving on the 4th of July evening, we noticed a giant trail of ants moving down our driveway and across the street. There were so many carrying eggs and food and all marching mostly in the same direction which was away from my home so we let them go. I was amazed at how coordinated they were and am glad their nest is somewhere else now. Hope the exterminator solves your bug troubles.

  14. Siestas were invented for a reason. We're doing the same - active early and late, and accomplish nothing for several hours mid-day. Looks like you have a lot of rain coming your way - heat AND humidity. May there be no serious flooding.

    1. The good news about rain is the plants get watered. Most of them are in containers, so they'll drain. The bad news is that I live in a flood plain. The good news is that my town is where the glacier left great alluvial soil, not rocks and clay -- that's a few miles away.
I'd like a siesta but I won't get one till Gary leaves.

  15. I agree--it is us or them when it comes to insects in the house! You'll be glad--all of you--to not have to worry about them anymore.
Gary knows his plants will be well tended to. Hope you are having a good day...maybe even a nap. ;)

  16. I wonder if, when Gary moves, he will still get you to plant-sit for him. My houseplants are not happy with me at the moment and are dying off at a rapid clip. Serves me right for believing something I read from another blogger about using 'banana water' - it seems my plants don't like it one little bit. Lesson learned the hard way.

  17. I would like to know the secret to tradescantia. Mine thrive...until they don't. They are so easy to root and try again, and every time that I do, they take off...and then die off.

    1. I think that's the pattern -- rapid replacement. I'd bet that's their pattern in the wild. A lot of plants are fleeting in nature, but we try to get them to live differently.

    1. I've been endlessly treating ants myself and I'm ready to bring out the big time!

When I had my pet care service it was home, plant and pet care. I had plant customers who left their houseplant collections in my hands for whole seasons. I haven't written about them much, less exciting than the pets.
