Meanwhile there's trivia

The current state of play: the car's in the shop, no word yet on insurance approval of the estimate, the holiday holding everything up.

The house is awaiting the estimate of the contractor sent by the insurance company, who visited a couple of days ago. Much more work than I'd thought.

The way it works now, he submits his estimate to third party, who conveys it to the insurer for approval. Could be days or more. After the approval, wait for contractor, then the work itself is about five days.

This looks like most of July, and I have questions about who does what still, so shocky that I didn't take it all in. Gary and the other neighbor were there for support.

The contractor  found the source of the ant problem we've been plagued with, a nest behind the stucco, and neighbors are getting an exterminator to address it for all three houses, all with the same problem.

Then there's the HOA situation, where after multiple attempts to get a ruling on whose responsibility the exterior wall is, finally the manager says he can't recommend a contractor, which we think means the HOA isn't involved.  That's one less complication.

Meanwhile there's nothing else to do but wait, something I'm not very good at.

Also in the condo, my rental, the ac is not working well, suddenly needs service. This was what finally knocked me down.

It may be expensive, and I'm here with no car. Tenant HS says he will call and arrange service and we'll go from there.  But it just seems too much right now. On top of the current political situation, which is there for me like everyone else, a dragging worry.

So, on to coping. Thank you all for lovely support and it helps a lot. I'm enjoying reading the series of Pargeter murders, saves me from running amok. Well maybe running is beyond me. Walking briskly amok.

We've had large storms, winds and rainfall. It must have been bad, because HS started out to a concert and turned back!

Here's our main development road Friday

I've been out walking, now doing the circuit of the development on sidewalks, too much mud for getting to the pond just now.

And I've been doing a yes2next video each evening, April and mom Aiko, different one each time. I'm happy with the stamina I'm building. I need it.

Yesterday I spent time with the teenager from next door, with her Gold Award girl scout project. It's about computer literacy for seniors and protection from scams.

I'm not really her target audience. In fact she was amazed at my online activity, and said I'd been blogging since she was born! And was also amazed I'm a founding member of an online platform.

I did point out gently that my generation has been working with computers at work since the early 60s. Then it was DOS and supplying information to mainframe operators. Now it's trying to keep up with rapid advances.

Then Gary visited later, saying he was running away from ironing, and we got caught up on his family doings.

Good news there: when he moves out, a family member who's a friend of mine, is to become his tenant. This will be great, and I told him to let her know she'll be on my baking roster, the bonus for living next door.

I also had a great lunch, depressed or not, figuring I'm worth it.

Potato salad with oil and vinegar, fresh picked celery greens, scallions, chives and lemon balm, sardines and watermelon. Dessert was yogurt, strawberries and Freecycled brown sugar.

Lovely weather, 80s and sunny, afternoon on the deck reading, listening to a lot of birdsong, and several visits from Gary on plant-related issues. I ended up giving him the current coleus growing in water with well developed roots, to plant in a pot.

One of the bird songs I was listening to I thought might be a catbird. I've seen a pair around, lovely tune. So I checked on YouTube and played a catbird video, yes, same song. Whereupon the real bird went silent. Eventually he started up again, I suppose realizing there was no rival for his site.

I think there are also young mourning doves locally, judging from the incessant flybys of parents past my fence, probably feeding them. Cardinals too.

Handsome Son picked up DVDs from the library for me, since I was waiting for the contractor and didn't like to be out. So I've got Pie in the Sky and Brokenwood for evening entertainment.

And a funny Freecycle happening. A few weeks ago I offered a batch of paperback novels, no takers. The other day I offered various things including a crate. No takers for the crate.

Then yesterday I offered a crate of books

Same crate, same books, but in five minutes I had a taker. Accidental marketing. Too funny. I'd had a quick taker for the folding wooden bookcase from the kitchen, now empty because I'd passed the contents out to various destinations.

All in all, things could be worse. Everyone keeps reminding me that the people are fine.

Happy day everyone, keep on keepin on, sez

Ted and co.

  2. You're allowed to be a little depressed - it's human nature to react thus. Hopefully, matters will be resolved swiftly.
I smiled at the teenager - they're always so surprised to discover they're not the first to experience events.

    1. She's such a nice girl. And amazed to find people were involved with computers waaaaaay back in the sixties! I hope she gets into the real history, way further back.

    1. I've mentioned it several times. A few months ago he started getting a house built in a nearby town, much bigger, to accommodate visiting grandchildren.

  4. You've probably heard of it, but there is an app (Merlin Bird ID by Cornell U) that you can put on your phone; you can record bird songs which the app then identifies (with photos). I've picked up 46 different bird sounds in my location over a period of time. Fun distraction. One you could use right now, I think. Take care.

  5. You probably have far more computer knowledge than the Girl Scout but that really IS a good project. I'm not sure why people are more apt to believe scams than younger people are but I have seen it happen. And then there's the fact that the scammers keep coming up with new scams.
I'm glad you're keeping up with your life, even as things are happening that are extremely hard to deal with. You are strong.

    1. On the contrary, when all my mailing list got an email supposedly from me asking for help, stranded in Spain, no money, it was the older people who instantly dismissed it. Younger people came to the house to see if I was OK! And my teen friend says her school was phished with a summer job scam, and many fell for it. I think the narrative about old people being scammed is largely ageist stereotyping. Some is related to dementia, but that person can't learn to protect themselves. But the notion that young people know more than their elders persists. Largely among young people.

  6. I hope actual motion forward will begin soon on your repairs, so you can feel less unsettled. I hear you about the skill of waiting...I was behind the door when that one was being handed out. But you are eating well and staying with a walking/exercise plan - among the best things we can do for ourselves during stressful times, or so I tell myself.

  9. I agree with AC. You do seem to be coping well. A lot is going on and here you are, cooking, exercising, engaging. A bonus, A family member of Gary's will be your neighbor!

  10. That’s a beautiful looking lunch. Yes, you’re worth it. What wonderful news about Gary’s renter. I haven’t stopped thinking about that and didn’t want to bring it up. I love your work with the teenager. I’m always surprised by the assumptions made and even the generalizations people of the senior generations make about all of us. I was involved in technology almost my entire career. I managed the first campus websites at two universities I was with. I created the first website design division at one university, and oversaw the website and directed all communications for another, online and in print. We’re not all dinosaurs.

    1. So true about age assumptions. Nice of you to refrain from the topic of Gary's leaving, thank you. Until I got the update from him it was an unhappy thought for me.
Your career has been spectacular. Yes, you don't need help with emailing! Nor with DOS in the past.

  12. You're completed entitled to feel overwhelmed, of course! Home projects often involved a lot of irons in the fire, as my mother would say, and this one certainly does. All those things going on at once (and having no/little control over it) -- yuck. I like that Gary's family member (whom you already know!) will be your new neighbor. That sounds not terrible at all.

  13. Well, this will be a July to remember - not in a good way! I hope the AC gets fixed first - it is miserable. And I am sure the holiday makes everything take longer and longer. Take it one day at a time. Let's look at October 1. It will be so much cooler. The car will be fixed and the kids will be in school and out of your driveway. The house will be fixed. The ants will be gone. And maybe someone one will have an extreme embarrassing medical emergency on stage while televised and his family will step up and put him somewhere where he can't hurt us anymore.

  14. My Dad - who is computer illiterate - got scammed over the phone a few months ago by someone pretending to be a contractor for the phone company. My Mum - who has dementia - was beside him, telling him it was a scam! Bastards got him for $2,000 by the time he got hold of the bank, but it could have been far worse.

  15. I reached that point of total overhwelm a bit ago and it had me down for a while. I always bounce back. Usually quickly, but sometimes it takes longer. I feel you are a bouncer, too. ;) Accept any help offered, for sure. I truly is help.

    2. Was harder for me this time, too. I think I was barely bouncing at all for 6-8weeks! I think the general state of the country added to that for me. You are a fellow bouncer, though. Of that I am sure! :)

  16. Best news: potential new neighbor sounds like a very good fit. Fingers crossed it all works out. And good for you for continuing your walks, fitness workouts, and healthy, delicious meals. You are VERY worth it, and (unlike much of the rest of your current life, alas) those are parts under your control.

  21. When it comes to contractors I suspect the waiting game is pretty much a given. Sadly our 'get on with it' personalities get impatient and just want it done. So sorry about the a/c at HS's - you certainly didn't need that on top of everything else. However, some good news in all this in that it sounds like the replacement neighbours are people you know.

It's a good thing HS is stepping up with the ac, because I can't even get there. I'm getting a lot of help with the house and car. I could do it myself, in fact I've done the critical things, but it's so good to have people there and taking part and discussing it.
