Reset review, food and other good things

I'm finding my new less-filled schedule is so much better for my current energy level. I'm learning to dodge the kneejerk response and it's so much better.  I'm not doing All the Things.

But I have got back into daily exercise with yes2next, which is reviving my energy, oddly. My doctor would say what did I tell you? Move less it's harder to move, move more it's easier.

The heat and humidity have hit my walking, and yesterday I got in half the distance then was so fatigued and hot I turned back. But indoor movement is good. Back into strength training, too.

My neighbor I haven't seen in a while, gardening expert, came out as I passed on my walk, to  chat plants,  and exchange Gary updates(!). She commented that he's trying to live in two places at once, too true.

Then, great news, my contractor artist friend came Thursday to measure and decide the bathroom work, yay. He's very apologetic about having me wait so long, but this year he's been slammed.

Not just work, his faraway widowed mother needed a visit, he's the only child, more health issues. He also got involved in fostering, retraining and rehoming a dog for someone who couldn't cope (pause for phone search for pictures, cavapoo, beautiful).

This ended up in driving the dog to Florida, many hours, to rehome the dog with his own daughter, great choice. He will not fly with his own dogs, airlines terrible with animals, so he wouldn't fly with this one.

Then various work issues including rescuing Gary more than once, and more Gary updates.

This is the nice thing about a small town with friendly neighbors. Contracting is not just a commercial transaction, though he did leave with decisions and paint and tile samples, it's a local verbal newspaper.

And I'm still getting flowers, probably a couple more weeks yet

The yellow ones are from a seed mix, not sure what they are, but likely black eyed susans.

And Misfits arrived in the midst of the bathroom caper

This involved one of my least favorite tasks, chopping onions, yellow and red. I use a lot, chop them into eighths, freeze, and they work in every recipe. Sometimes I chop further when I cook, but cutting semi thawed onions doesn't make a person cry. It's a chemistry thing.

I cooked the strawberries and apples together, with diced fresh ginger. I'm really liking these fruit combos with apples.

And of course the potatoes are now parboiled and great for dicing and roasting. My orders are smaller just now, doing catch-up with the freezer, read on.

Lovely shrimp with baby bellas and scallions, both cooked down in butter, over rice flavored with Better than Bouillon.

More for two more days, too. I posted a little video of this but YouTube really distorted it and it displayed without the veggies. But it still got hundreds of views, search me.

And I'm reading several books at once, what else is new, a Horowitz, a Worsley and a whole lot of Thirkell.

I love Horowitz for his first person narrator. We know about the omniscient narrator and the unreliable narrator, and he introduces a new one.

The aggrieved narrator, always mad at his character Hawthorne and how he gets better deals everywhere than Horowitz does, from hotel rooms to contracts.  This one is set partly in Yorkshire, many familar scenes to this North Yorkshirewoman.

Lucy takes me back to the world of the Tudors

And Thirkell to the early twentieth century, and the world of the pre-Raphaelites, as the  granddaughter of Burne-Jones, all bases covered

And handsome Son continues, with my fervent encouragement, to declutter.

I bought this calligraphy from the artist long ago, had it for several years, passed it to Handsome Son, who asked me after several more years, to Freecycle it.

Several competitors for this including two who could read it. That was an easy placement.

Then more miscellaneous stuff -- there's more in the can there -- all of which was claimed in short order.

The cutlery tray is now in my junk drawer, all the junk organized and why didn't I think of this before, the others all gone to various destinations.

Happy day everyone, as Handsome Son routinely says in his morning text, all's good here!

    1. It's very entertaining. I waited ages on the library waitlist, but it was worth the wait.

  2. You do sound happy! I've been walking inside when the weather is so hot - Inside a local mall and also an inside track at my local fitness center. So that helps me get my steps in. I've picked up a summer cold from my oldest son and may cancel the Labor Day cookout we had planned for tomorrow so I don't spread the germs...

    1. Why does it feel worse to get a cold in hot weather? It seems so wrong. I hope yours clears up soon.

    2. I'm better today and will go ahead with the cookout! Hope you are having a good weekend, too!

  3. You sound more centered with your new schedule, as well as more energized. May new 'obligations' not creep back in. Your contractor is a Good Person in so many ways. Taking in, retraining, and rehoming a cavapoo or any other dog is a lot of work; how cool his daughter is the new home.
I took a look at Horowitz and the Magpie Murders in the library today, couldn't tell how intense it was so put it back on the shelf for now.
Good for HS and the decluttering.

    1. Yes, I think centered is good. I feel less pressured. That said, a lot of pressure is my own demands on myself!

Mike and his wife are experienced dog people, who successfully handle high energy pups, like JRTs, and temperamental ones like westies., and they're currently being owned by two excitable CKCs!

Their daughter has a rescue already, grew up with dogs, and the parents stayed long enough to see Ollie was nicely accepted by her current dog. Picture of them lying together on the bed! But that all took time he hadn't scheduled when he agreed to my bathroom.

Handsome Son has reached the point in life where you start to shed instead of acquire. It comes to most of us sooner or later.

  5. Being basically lazy, I gave up doing "All the Things" when I retired. Having free time comes in handy now when older neighbours need help as I can just stop whatever I'm doing and go to them.

  7. Trains are better for transporting pets than airlines. But they restrict the number that can travel on any train. I tried misfits when they first came out, but I wasn't pleased with the quality. I got too many veggies that were rotten. I hope they have solved that problem now.

    1. I think a nervous animal on a long journey, needing walks and bathroom breaks, probably was better in a car with one familiar person, and no strange train sounds and movement. I didn't know dogs could travel in a train, in fact.

I have never had any problems with quality from Misfits, in six years, and I wonder if your problem was FedEx, who are the only delivery service, in some regions. It's certainly never been a misfits problem or they'd be out of business by now. That said, it's too bad you didn't get good deliver.

  9. I’m glad all’s good there. And absolutely yes, move less it’s harder to move, move more it’s easier. I haven’t been moving enough lately because I haven’t felt like facing the 100+ heat (110+ the other day). I know it’s the right choice and workouts at home are fine, but I miss really moving every day. I’m going to face the heat (only 102) shortly and get out for at least an hour. With sun screen and a cap. It’s good to know feel obligated to do all the things.

    1. Yes, the lack of walking has made a real difference this year. Either too hot or high winds and torrential rain, making walking near trees hazardous. I'm looking forward to cooler days, too.

  10. You've reminded me that I've fallen off the walking wagon and I must get back to it. It's downright boring to walk the halls in the building but it's the only way I can get a walk of any sort in. If I were to venture outside the RC insists on coming with me and his falling risk is quite high plus he walks at a snail's pace which doesn't help me at all. Now the weather has turned a tad cooler I guess I'd better give myself a stern talking to and get back to it.
Glad your contractor friend is back to it and that you'll have a safer tub situation one day soon.

    1. Can't you get out while he's cooking or something? I'd be inclined to, even if only for a walk around the building! But yes, you need to keep up a brisk pace.

    2. Nope - he would promptly put the cooking on hold so he could come with me. At least when I hall walk I can do it alone and at my more brisk pace.

  11. Sounds like you're doing it just right. We do put obligations on ourselves that are truly unnecessary.
We shall be eating shrimp tonight too. Not sure yet what I'll be doing with them.

    1. Once in a while shrimp is a treat. I usually cook in butter and since they're frozen, delicious liquid happens. You really can't miss. I usually flavor rice as I cook it. Better than bouillon is great. I was wondering about pasta but rice was a change.

  14. I'm glad you're doing less and feeling better about it. Strangely, exercise is the best treatment for fatigue. It's so much easier to walk when you don't feel like collapsing due to the heat.

  19. Good news on the soon to be started bathroom redo, Boud,. I know what you mean about moving less outdoors when the weather is still warm. I switched to after dinner walks on the riverwalk when it's cooler. Soon it will be cooler all day, yeah! I am also a fan of Anthony Horowitz and just finished the one you're reading now. I like the series with Susan Rydell and the last one just premiered on masterpiece Mystery last night, Marblehead Murders. Thanks for letting me know that Lucy Worsley has a new book.

  20. At first, I imagined you were just a regular New Jerseyan Yank lady but here you refer to your roots in North Yorkshire and my jigsaw blogpost elicited fond memories of Staithes. I hope I am not being too nosy as I ask - Where in North Yorkshire did you grow up?

    1. Not nosy, just the question of a newish reader. Old blogistas feel free to scroll on! First five years of life, war years, in the Yorkshire Dales, just under Roseberry Topping. Then sadly, Middlesbrough till uni at Manchester, never to return. Next stop -- Wisconsin! Later NJ. And then it was now.
