Quilted portraits, ballots and misfits

Isn't this expressive? I had to show you. I plan to find more.

It's deceptively simple, but really very accomplished work.

Speaking of which, S,  a blogista and commenter, just posted this elsewhere.

Exciting or what? It sounds like a form of four selvedge weaving, as seen in back strap loom work, from this region, still in use. Thank you so much, S.  This is very accomplished weaving. Also spinning, to produce that fine thread.

If anyone can get to MFA Boston, take a look.

In other exciting news, I tracked my ballot, just to be sure it was picked up from the drop box

Yes. Ready to be counted after polls close. The primary's not till June, I always vote early. This also lets candidates know how active a given area is, so they can redirect funding to get out the vote in low turnout areas.  We're electing a governor and county, state and local officials.

Misfits arrived.

While I was trying to get help bringing in the box, not yet advisable to lift anything from ground level, Gary came bursting in with it and set it on the counter.

Lovely greens, annual order of bitter dandelion leaves, spring tonic, and rainbow chard. The stems and ribs are now in the stock bag.

Vanilla essence, ages since I got the last, which is about to run out. Mango chunks for this week's treat food. Baby bellas probably for stirfry, with chard and other vegetables. Berries and yogurt for desserts.  Eggs and cheddar staples. Gala apples likewise.

I have fish thawing to cook tomorrow, and I'm still finishing up the chicken drumsticks, so the greens and salads will fit with them.

As usual, the produce is lovely, fresh and peak quality.

I watched the Steve Martin Cheaper by the Dozen, afternoon matinee. It was okay, a generic big family movie, a bit too ready for slapstick, no relation to the original plot.

Movie makers tend to see a  big family as a theater troupe of clowns and trick cyclists, performing. But if you could suspend disbelief, a fun afternoon movie with a pot of tea.  And there were nice interiors.

I feel quite smug this afternoon. House clean, laundry done, groceries prepped, box broken down for recycle. Look at meeeee!!

This evening I'm at a town hall online with Jasmine Crockett if I can get in.

Happy day everyone, be smug if you're feeling it, you're entitled to be. But keep sending good vibes to brave Ukraine.

  1. Those faces are fabulous. Yes, very expressive. The food that was delivered look great. I would eat all the fruit. Those strawberries look amazing. Enjoy.

    1. She was great, as always. Unvarnished truth, no sugar coating.

  4. That quilting is indeed expressive. It would be so easy for those faces to be bland and 2 dimensional but they look at one another so well - so lovingly.

    1. Yes, I've seen very bland tries at this. But this is a real tour de force.

    1. There are other grocers calling themselves misfits, like a generic term. Mine is Misfits Market. I live in one of the best regions for delivery, since they're NJ based and have acquired Imperfect Foods, whose drivers and vehicles deliver to my region. Other regions still have to rely on (rotten old) fedex. Just a word of caution in case your state uses FedEx.

  6. I had to look up Jasmine Crockett. I like her alliterative style. I imagine she's quite a force to contend with.

    1. She's brilliant, always prepared, feared by the right who keep attacking her. Also groomed to the nines always.

  7. I have seen quilts with appliqué making the most beautiful pictures. All with fabric and yarn.
    Beautiful work

    1. Yes, it's a whole level above the notion of quilting. Australian quilters have long been in the forefront of art quilting.

  9. That quilt is so amazing. All of the quilts I have made are pretty much squares sewn together. Nothing fancy but fun to do.
I'm doing another protest on Sunday - the group hopes to stretch from Aurora, Illinois all the way to Chicago, Illinois According to the internet that's about 41 miles! We will line up and not be marching but staying in our place to cover the distance. It's called Hands Across Chicagoland - hope we get a good turnout.

  10. I hope Jasmine Crockett has a long and illustrious political life. I can see her as Madam President. I would vote for her.
Wait. Canned mangos? I guess I knew there was such a thing. I do believe mangos are the best fruit of all the fruits.

    1. I admire Crockett so much, fearless.
I never saw canned mangoes so I thought why not. It's such a tossup buying them fresh.

  11. Gary is so kind!
That is such an expressive quilt! Really is art.
    I can't imagine weaving that old surviving--wow!
Seeing Crockett in person has to be a treat. She shoots from the hip and is well informed. I really think she is one to contend with. Always enjoy listening to her. :)

  12. Haha, thanks, Liz! Something else I learned at MFA Boston yesterday was the use of "Artist Once Known" on artwork labels. I don't know how long that's been done, but yesterday was the first I'd noticed it. I love it! So much better than "Artist Unknown". It feels like an important point being made: The artist was indeed known, if in the past.

    1. It beats attributing women's work to their male relatives and mentors! I hadn't seen that yet, so I'm glad to know it's being done.

  17. I did NOT recommend Cheaper by the Dozen as a classic film - sorry!! What some children and teenagers put us through. There was also a dog move - quite glad that I can't remember the name of that one (oh, and there is an even WORSE CBTD2 in that franchise - my children owe me!)
