Misfits and frogs

Thursday morning I walked to the pond and visited with a little frog who studied me, see him there?  while the turtles swam away and the other excitable frogs screamed and leapt into the water.

Home to find that the last few sunny days have woken up the zinnias again and given me a few more

And since Jeff was scheduled to deliver my Misfits late morning I put out the returns

Catch up this week, oils because I was out of both, chocolate because, a lovely cauliflower with a cheese sauce in its future, potatoes for parboiling then roasting, cans for the food pantry, spaghetti because I forgot I had plenty, panko which is becoming a staple, apples and blueberries likewise also yogurt, bread until I get back to baking now the weather's cooler, beautiful lemons free of charge, redeemed some points, which will be slices and zest.

After this came the bit I don't like,  washing the produce. Then slicing and chopping and wrapping and zesting and draining and fridging and freezing up a storm. But I'm always glad I did the prep when I come to cook. The cooking is the fun part. The poor old sous-chef does the dull bits.

On the step is the fall pumpkin from the box. Its a sugar pumpkin so it will come in as soon as the squirrels take a bite, to be cooked into something I haven't decided yet

Meanwhile look at the beauty of this food

The smell of organic produce delivered quickly after picking, and the textures, all different, all lovely. These yellow potatoes make the best roast dice.

I did a meditation online Thursday evening as a good way to mark the day, and I think I'll resume my practice. I hope it will help me cope with anxiety.

I got the news about the new heat pump, and it will be well into five figures, pretty much as expected. So I'll have to get that $$ ($$$) organized.

I have choices of what level of quality I can go for. Partly it's a choice of what I can afford, partly it's about what level is warranted in that old and mediocre building. No point sewing diamond buttons on ragged pants.

But my main concern is that Handsome Son have a reliable heat source in winter now that the fireplace is sealed.

Aside from that, Mrs Lincoln..

Happy day everyone. Meditate. Let's remember we're not helpless. Fight back. Don't give in ahead of time, sez Ted and Big Ursy.

  1. Good advice from Ted and Big Ursy. I enjoy seeing what you have in your box. Cleaning and prepping everything is always a good idea. A lot of work but smooths the way. We had to get a new heat pump a couple of years back. Remember the expense well. Have a great weekend :)

    1. Yes, I don't like the prep but it's more fun cooking when it's done. Enjoy your weekend.

  2. I always enjoy your Misfits feast photos. Good luck deciding on the heat pump. I’d have a difficult time; I think diamond buttons and ragged pants are a great combination.

    1. Alas I can't afford the diamond button level of heatpump. I will probably go midrange.

  3. Deep breath as you rearrange the $$$. The apples are so shiny and tempting.

  4. Such beautiful food. I've just been around our garden and find a few blooms still.
And a goodly reminder that we're not helpless and can fight back.

  5. Everything looks so good and fresh!
So sorry to hear the pump is going to cost so much.
Never heard that saying before (no point sewing diamond buttons on ragged pants) and I just love it.
    Have a wonderful day. :)

    1. The good news is that I can pay it. The bad news is that the $$ was intended for another purpose! I may have made up that expression.

  7. Sounds like you and I are going through some of the same things right now. It's not easy. It is not easy. I will be thinking of you.

    1. Yes, and I have to remember the current system is well beyond its life expectancy.

  10. That produce certainly doesn't look as if it's imperfect. The grocers here are starting to offer imperfect bags of various things and that's usually what we buy. Sorry about the big bucks required to replace the heat pump but I guess it's a necessary thing.

    1. I made the $$$ transfer this morning ready to deal with the new heat pump, ouch.
The produce is largely about size. The apples are small, the lemons large and the potatoes mixed small and medium. I think the blueberries are surplus. But it's all good food. I imagine the organic farmers are happy to have this market for goods the supermarket chains decline.

  12. I cannot imagine having to pay that much for heat - here, we did spend three figures on a new heater this year! I was very surprised at the size of fruit and veg in the shops when we were in California - the too big would be seconds here, what you have there is ideal size

    1. This is the cost of an entire heating and cooling system for a condo. It's not the cost of heat, that's a monthly bill. Amortized over the 23 years since I last replaced it, it's less painful! And considering our temperature swings from below zero f in winter to 10O f in summer, we need a robust system.

  13. That's a fantastic Misfits box. Yes, after that heat pump estimate, you'll need to meditate.

  14. We have toyed with the idea of a heat pump as well. I'm guessing your son lives in a condo that you own. As you said, don't sew diamond buttons on ragged pants.
My mum's favorite quote was "A blind man on a galloping horse would be glad to see it."
That Misfits Market looks interesting. Sadly we don't have anything like that, yet.

    1. Yes, my son is my tenant. Heat pumps do best in less severe climates. Here zero is about the lowest we get and I suspect lower might be a problem. Your mom must have been English -- that's a familiar saying.
That's too bad that you don't have a misfits type of company. I really do well with mine.

  15. Your misfits delivery looks wonderful! But the heat pump replacement makes me glad I'm a renter.
