Tuesday was a great Knitting Group meeting, with a new member
I just finished a good collection of mystery short stories by P D James. I didn't know she'd written any, only familiar with her novels
And the hat is almost complete. I just have to finish and attach the band and it's done. The international spy returned to model it.
Here's how it looks off. When the band is stitched -- I cut it on the bias to drape well -- and attached, the green binding won't show on top. It does show under the brim, quite nicely. The construction worked out pretty well.
While I was recycling I found this very nice airtight canister, which I cleaned up and briefly thought about keeping
Tuesday's Textiles and Tea featured a fiber artist specializing in braided work, but interested in -- shoes! And yard goods from which she creates clothing. She's one of the most inventive guests they've had in a long time.
Even after her discussion, I'm mystified about how her braided sculptures, a few inches each way, are constructed. Her clothing is chef's kiss perfectly made and fitted. She says you can get sneaker kits, which provide the sole, and you go from there. She learned to handmake leather shoes long ago, but prefers the leather and fiber combo you see here.
I think she's one of those people who can make anything!
Happy day, everyone. If we can't make everything, we can enjoy seeing other people doing it. All good.

That hat turned out beautifully and most importantly, it fits. Your knitting group sounds lovely, perhaps I'll look for something similar. It's nice to sit with other women and just chat. I imagine quilting bees were so popular because they allowed women to come together.
ReplyDeleteThat artist is amazing. Wow.
If you can find a similar group, try it. The nicest are usually run by libraries or senior centers, not yarn stores where they're about selling product. Libraries get the widest age range, which I like. Thanks for the nice words about the hat.
DeleteI love it when someone rediscovers their love of craft.
ReplyDeleteThat braided art is something very special. I don’t think I could get my head round doing it. So I too will use Sit and admire
The braiding baffles me, too. I may pass on that one.
DeleteA knitting group sounds like a fun get together. All the items are impressive and seeing others creativity is always enjoyable. Your hat is looking great.
ReplyDeleteThe group has some skilled members and some less so but they still enjoy the sessions. It's a nice balance.
DeleteAlpaca and cotton is a blend that I haven't met before..far better than the one mixed with a nylon/plastic fibre!
ReplyDeleteThe shirt bear is a brilliant idea. Huggable memories.
The group is a lively mix...just what is needed!!
I think if you're buying alpaca you want a natural fiber blend, rather than a synthetic. This one feels like a cloud.
DeleteThe hat is looking good! I've just downloaded Allingham short sorties, I'll look out for that one.
ReplyDeleteThose braided textiles... those wonderful sculpted forms...
Maybe I'll look for the allingham, if Albert Campion and Lugg are involved.
DeleteThe braiding is really mysterious, and wonderful.
I’m overwhelmed by all the incredible workmanship today. Wow. I would LOVE an alpaca/cotton sweater. I can imagine it’s softness and lightness.
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot going on today! You would love that fiber, as a scarf, too. I expect Cordoba gets cold winters?
DeleteIt does get chilly enough here for scarves and sweaters... if anyone feels like knitting something!
DeleteI expect to see you making shoes next.
ReplyDeleteI've done that in the past. When I was about 11 I found some thin leather and made myself a pair of sandals. A bit thin on hard ground, but not too bad. Since then I've made others, including a pair of indoor outdoor ones based on a leather sole, quite recently. Nowadays my old feet need more sturdy shoes though.
DeleteDear Boud 🥰
ReplyDeleteI feel inspired by your love for creativity 🥹🥰
Everything looks amazing and intriguing actually 🤗
I loved aplaca ,the colour and design so beautiful 👍
Teddies for your late friend’s grandchild must be cool and lovely ♥️
The Todds are cute and fun 👌
I loved your hat most 👍🥰♥️
You did a fantastic job and hat looks fabulous 😍
Sending you love and best wishes ♥️🥰🙏
Baili, I'm glad you enjoy all the news, and thank you for the nice words about the hat.
DeleteYou look a real spy in hat my friend 🤗
ReplyDeleteBook sounds great too
I look very mysterious! Tell us what you're reading, too. I'm always interested.
DeleteWow! Those braided structures are amazing.
ReplyDeleteGreat hat, and I love that Frog and Toad.
Frog and Toad were beloved in my house when handsome son was young, so I'm not surprised her grandson loves them. He's waiting impatiently for Toad now.
DeleteThe braiding is great, but I really admire her clothes, beautiful fabric, well fitted, handstitched
Love the hat. I always look forward to your report of the knitting group. Such creative people!
ReplyDeleteAren't they? They're also interesting people to talk with.
DeleteDitto what everyone else has said. My favorite would be the alpaca/cotton blanket. I once had an alpaca shawl which I inadvertently gave to a charity.
ReplyDeleteThat was a loss, but someone must have been thrilled to get it.
DeleteI was also aware of short stories by PD. I see that either Britbox or Acorn is streaming a lot of her material, or I should say adaptations.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a subscriber, but there's quite a bit available other ways.
DeleteWhen I was at the local branch library this week, I saw that a group had set up in the big room they use for such things and it was a sewing group- many sewing machines. They were working on quilts to be sold for charities. It just didn't look as cozy as a knitting group though.
ReplyDeleteOh- that alpaca blanket! Shawl? Even I could do that, I think. A Teddy made from the shirt of a beloved is the best idea.
Um...I think YOU are one of those people who can make anything.
I think the sound of sewing machines would be harder to talk over. Hand stitching would be nice in a group though. Surprisingly to me, D is planning on using a machine to sew the bear. I'd have thought it a bit small to be running through a machine, short seams.
DeleteI don't know if I can make anything, though I do get a lot of urges!
The international spy reappears! Love the hat. I would not be able to part with the canister, it's too cute.
ReplyDeleteThe person getting the canister is excited -- she collects pigs, evidently, can't wait to add this in.
DeleteYour hat looks great! I love the variety in your stitching group. My favorite today is the Frog and Toad. So cute!
ReplyDeleteAren't F and T great? My son loved those books when he was small.
DeleteThat fiber art is fascinating, and I love Frog and Toad and the t-shirt teddy bear! What a great idea! The hat did indeed work out well and looks very fetching modeled by the international spy. :)
ReplyDeleteWe seem to have gone over to the toy side! The international spy left in a long black car with tinted windows and a driver who looked like Oddjob, but she did leave the hat.
DeleteI love Frog and Toad! I read those books to my children long ago. The hat turned out very well.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Toad and Frog are just TOO adorable! And your hat turned out great!
ReplyDeleteThere's an eager boy waiting for his Toad.
DeleteSneaker kits. Well, I had no clue! I also have no clue how you would even begin to turn out something like she does.
ReplyDeleteHats off to you too. I love the joy on your face.
I just find it very funny how excited I get about making stuff! And that very solemn face I catch when I'm concentrating! So serious, such important stuff..
DeleteToad and Frog are adorably fun and look just like the book illustrations I've seen. And those braided sculptures are incredibly detailed. I'm now wondering if you could (or would, being the key word) attempt something similar, only formed using pin weavings.
ReplyDeleteI have used fine wire to shape pin weavings, and it's not really my thing. The tight braided pieces are a bit too tense for my taste, but a lot of people love them.
