Hats off, it's fall -- see chrysanthemums

Saturday morning early I looked out at the weather and saw on the step

Complete with its own water supply, clearly from Gary, his touch.

Fall has arrived. Also an official state of emergency declared by the Loot Guv,   because of the upcoming storm. I'm postponing the dentist. The library will close, so our group art opening is off.

So I finished the hat ribbon

And the summer hats will decorate the staircase wall till needed. Some people like to collect antique hats as decor. I like to wear my decor.

Meanwhile I'm rereading Penelope Lively

About life after the death of the domineering mother, and the effects of her death on the lives of her adult children.

It's elegiac but funny at times, the characters drawn with great understanding and insight. Well, of course they are, it's Penelope Lively.

Before the storm knocks them down I thought I'd better pick the few remaining zinnias.

Happy day everyone, see if you can find a few flowers, real or metaphorical. One flower: I was finally able to delete the offending links and replace the words without links. I couldn't do this before -- wouldn't delete! Now it's done. Good.

  1. "I like to wear my decor."

Nice when something has multiple uses.

    1. Around here it's a requirement! No single use items if possible.

  2. Hope the storm fizzles out before it gets to you!

    1. Right now it's looking that way. The art opening and dentist cancelled to no purpose. Tomorrow I'll see if the dentist can see me after all, if I catch them before they reassign my slot. Unless the storm comes roaring in after all.

  3. Nothing like a storm to crash start the cold seasons, but you could do without nature weighing in on the disaster side of things. The chrysanthemums are lovely colours - what a neighbour. (mine has just shared some sunflower seeds that were given to her - so hopefully some colour in both our gardens this year)

  4. Gifts of chrysanthemums... It is interesting how things differ from country to country... apparently in France these are funereal flowers...not to be given to a living loved one or friend!

  5. Hope the storm isn’t too bad, Boud. Wise to take in the last of the blooms.

    1. They're blooming endlessly. I'd forgotten how long I could keep picking.

  6. Lovely flowers. I love the smell of chrysanths - many people don't. I could decorate our house with hats, but won't.

    1. It's one of those smells I didn't like when I was younger and do now. Likewise marigolds and privet.

  7. Lovely blooms and I agree about your decor. I hope you'll be safe during the storm.

    1. It's looking like a non storm just now, unless it suddenly starts up.

  8. Our flowerpots are still doing well enough. They survived a light frost last week, and I don’t think there is another in the immediate forecast.

    1. I think a light frost doesn't bother them, same here.

  9. That was sweet of Gary.
Your hats on the wall reminded me of the time Lily had found something she really liked and I cannot remember what it was but she said, "I have no idea what to do with it," and Hank replied, "Has our mother taught you nothing? Hang it on the wall."
    Stay safe in that storm.

    1. Hank got it. Hank usually does. The storm isn't here and I'm hoping it stays that way.

  10. The hats look great. I'm glad you picked your zinnias. They belong inside where you can enjoy them every day!

    1. I planted them as picking flowers. Next year I may put some out front too, for everyone to see, as well as the picking garden in the back. That's worked very nicely.

  11. Oh good -- I'm glad you sorted out the linking! Nice zinnia bouquet, and your chrysanthemums are so dense! The ones I bought yesterday are still half-buds.

    1. I think I'm finally ahead of the linking. I can't imagine why anyone would want it, some algorithm putting in links where it feels like it! The Hippolyta one cracked me up! Stupid link to the Greek idea when it was just Mitch's joke name! You certainly can't accuse techies of having any sense of irony or humor. Or any sense, come to think of it.

  13. Hope the storm doesn't cause much damage, nor keep people from doing their normal activities. I don't expect it will impact anything this far inland, so am going to drive up the Parkway tomorrow.

    1. It was. He does this each year. I really like the hats on the wall. They're where I'd put them on anyway.

  15. You certainly don't need a storm - let's hope it decides to track elsewhere. Very nice of Gary to give you a mum AND the water to go along with it (at least I'm assuming it's a gift and not another case of babysitting!).
Hats as art can't help but be a good thing. Practicality at its best.
