Thursday started out with an email from the condo mgt saying several condos in Handsome Son's building have found roaches. I don't think he has seen any, but every condo in the building must be inspected and possibly treated.
Sooo, sighing deeply, I put in a call to Exterminator John who treated my house in the summer. Always something. I'd just written a sizeable check for the HO insurance for the year.
I texted Handsome Son requesting he check and do serious cleaning and decluttering. He's good about putting food away, but very clutter prone. He hasn't seen any roaches. But they're sneaky fellers.
On to better news. More simple upcycling. This is the white shirt from The Box. After removing all these frilly bits
From everywhere, collar, shoulders, sleeves, someone went mad, this nice simple cotton shirt emerged
Just iron and it's ready. I had tried it on to make sure it fits. It's labeled xs which I'm not, but their xs is more like s. It works. Twenty minutes clipping, done.
Two items down, two to go. One item needed nothing done to it, big t-shirt for nightwear. I need to shorten the pants, and decide what to do with the wraparound dress/tunic.
This box is proving a good thing. Definitely has entertainment value beyond just shopping.
Not entertaining is the loss of SNAP food support in the next couple of days. Now is when we all need to find out how to give practical help locally to emergency ministries, food banks, whatever is being set up. My state assemblyman has set up a collection system to supply locations in Trenton with food and donated money.
If you're not in the USA, there's great need in Jamaica which took a direct hit from Melissa. World Central Kitchen is already on their way. They can use $$.
Go to their website and follow from there
Happy day everyone, we can do what we can but it's still okay to enjoy, too.

You found a very nice shirt under all the frills. I like it
ReplyDeleteIt's much better now, I think.
DeleteTerrible time in Jamaica. Not sure what SNAP is but can kinda guess given the state of US politics and government. Society's safety nets being cut away - responsi ility returned to communities, charities and individuals
ReplyDeleteIt's food stamps, used by the neediest people, often people with jobs that don't pay enough to go round.
DeleteYes, do what you can AND enjoy. Your new clothes are a wonder.
ReplyDeleteEnjoying is a bit harder just now, but it's good.
DeleteI think it is too cold here for foreign cockroaches to survive winter, but your area gets even colder, so I don't know. I've seen one cockroach here in our building in the 2000s, and one in our Sydney accommodation. They are quite horrible, but our own bush cockroaches are fine, and stick to the bush.
ReplyDeleteI think they can survive practically anything!
DeleteTG the only roach incident we had was more than 50 years ago in a condo. They did send in exterminators, and we’ve never had a repeat, but Sue put food in containers like Tupperware for many years afterward.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the condo has them. This is a precaution. He already keeps food enclosed, so that's not a problem. We'll see.
DeleteWe are finding wasps in our basement currently, possibly coming in through vents. We shall see! Leave it to them to find a way to torment!
ReplyDeleteThey're smart. Insects will definitely win most times.
DeleteYou have been so clever with your box of clothes.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to play with, then have useful things.
DeleteThe devistation in Jamiaca is awful and thank you for reminding me to make a donation.
ReplyDeleteJack's mom had cockroaches in our rental house (we have german cockroaches, smaller but still gross), she lived in filth. Took awhile to get rid of all of them.
That blouse turned out beautiful.
I don't think we have them. Anyway I'm getting an inspection, to find out.
DeleteThat top was a nice piece drowning in frills. I usually remove stuff like that, not my style.
The one and only time I have seen cockroaches was when I lived in Atlanta. I turned the kitchen light on and the room moved with them. I have a monthly extermination after that. My state is diverting money to SNAP but that can go on only so long. I like the blouse.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your state is helping. Winter coming on and food scarcity is a bad combo.
DeleteThanks for the link. I give to food banks and plan to donate for hurricane relief. The blouse is very pretty.
ReplyDeleteYou're good people, e, to be thinking about other people at a tough time for yourself.
DeleteI can't stand frilly bits either. I'd cut them all off too.
ReplyDeleteThey were ruining an otherwise very wearable shirt. It's a lovely finewoven Indian cotton.
DeleteLike the blouse less frilly. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteYes, Jamaica has been hit worse than ever before.
SNAP is gone for me in November. A lot more rice and oatmeal in my future.
I'm so sorry you're losing SNAP. Can family help? Food bank? Are there any programs happening near you? Some churches are doing emergency food. I hope fervently it's quickly resolved for you and other friends needing SNAP.
DeleteDagan and Leah will help but I didn't move here to be a burden on them, you know? :(
ReplyDeleteI doubt if they'd see it as a burden, but I hear you.
DeleteThe blouse 👚 is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I like it much better now.
DeleteAmong other ways people are stepping up: the Boise Farmer's Market is offering $40 of free local food for every SNAP beneficiary who can come to the Saturday market. I am so proud of our small farmers.
ReplyDeleteGlad you called out World Central Kitchen as a worthy direction for Jamaica donations. Our niece and family watched them in Alameda (California) after its devastating fire last winter (their house was 2 blocks from the fire boundary). She reports that WCK was immediately there and besides providing good nutritious food, was an incredible spirit lifter.
Chris from Boise
Thanks for the good news. We need some right now.
DeleteOh, the dreaded roaches situation! You will likely remember when we went through an entire building fumigation and had to move every-single-thing in our apartment away from the walls and cupboards so they could spray. It was NOT fun and made even more so by the fact that we never saw any in our unit. I feel for your son.
ReplyDeleteI think right now it's time to really step up to donate to the food banks because the need is growing by the day. I was absolutely horrified yesterday when we stopped in at McDonald's to get a coffee and a muffin and overheard the worker telling the next customer that there were no more muffins. The customer was somewhat miffed and the worker told her that if they made more most of them would likely be thrown out at the end of the day. Throwing perfectly good food away is NOT what should be done.
Fortunately the tech found nothing and just did a precautionary spray of the baseboards.
DeleteThere are laws about end of day food. But around here there are programs where restaurants sell off end of day very cheaply. One of my knitting friends has done it.
That shirt came out really well!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I don't know why they buried it under frills. There was nothing to hide.
