Yesterday I did the shrimp, dipped in aqua faba, as an eggwash substitute, then cooked in a mixture of oil and the liquid off the shrimp, and breaded with panko.
Here cooking away, soon browned enough
I made a Will Yeung style dipping sauce and the crunchy shrimp were great. I took the single person's privilege of having a one item meal. Just shrimp. Lovely.
Today is about crackers. I'm planning on red lentil crackers with all kinds of seeds chucked in. I haven't made crackers for a while, so this will be good. I love crackers and cheese.
I was surprised at the variety of seeds I have here, caraway, fennel, cumin, methi. Should be interesting.
So here's the upshot
Ending in afternoon snack of crackers and cheese with tea, just in time for Textiles and Tea, featuring Lynne Dees.
She's a great freeform basket weaver making commentary on the political and natural environment in wonderful pieces she hand dyes. Her large pieces, about 40" + inches square, take inspiration from tobacco baskets, large, shallow and open weave to store the leaves but let air circulate.
She's a basket weaver without borders! Take a look
This is really painting with reed.
Coraline Cake, reference to the suffrage movement in America where suffragists wrote and sold cookbooks as fundraisers and to counter the vicious claims that they were neglecting their families and ruining everyone's lives! The recipe for this cake is embroidered around the placemat.
Left is a detail from Australia Burning, see her website for the whole piece
Fish trap. It's caught mainly plastic refuse
This piece reflects on a period when the artist's heart suddenly gave her trouble
She was originally a painter and makes drawings and paintings of design ideas
This was a lovely episode, and makes a person want to weave baskets!
Happy day, everyone! Get weavin. One way or another.
Her cake is so beautiful it looks almost real! Sounds like you had a good day,
ReplyDeleteThe cake is startlingly lifelike.

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I do bring a lot of textile arts to readers who might not be aware of the online events I cover.
DeleteI am happy to say I followed you today. I haven’t been able to follow anyone for a long time. I always kept trying and lo and behold, all of a sudden, I can now.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear it. It's a blogger mystery how that happens or doesn't. Anyway, happy you're here and enjoying.
DeleteBasket weaving sounds so satisfying - beautiful and useful.
ReplyDeleteEspecially this kind. Using natural materials, too.
DeleteJust seeing these images makes me want to weave baskets. And your creations in the kitchen make want to to cook!
ReplyDeleteWant to cook?? That's quite a tribute.. I think one of those baskets would live happily in your apartment.
DeleteThose baskets are amazing. I’ve never seen anything similar!
ReplyDeleteIt's what happens when a painter turns to fiber, I think. Such a different eye.
DeleteThe shrimp-for-one meal sounds delicious Boud and how interesting to read and see how you made your own crackers. I've inly done breads. The cake did look good enough to eat and less calories for sure.
ReplyDeleteI like to make crackers, easy to do, and no additives. You might enjoy trying them. With cheese, soup, for dips, all that.
DeleteI really like the way her art represents certain things from her life or other inspirations. Very well done!
ReplyDeleteIt's appealing, because we can identify with her concerns and see how she expresses them. I like that aspect, too.
DeleteThe cake is amazing and the story behind it makes it even better. I have never made crackers.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great piece. It's also technically very proficient. No crackers? Maybe try them. They go with soup nicely.
DeleteThe comment by DeniseinVA prompted me to check if I was a follower of you and I realized that I was not! Now I am!
ReplyDeleteLovely art - isn't it great that art can take so many different forms...
Well, thank you for joining our merry band of blogistas!
DeleteThe shrimp looks so good. Crackers! I haven't made crackers but once when Dagan was little--so many decades ago. Looks like you are a much better cracker maker than I was--lol!
ReplyDeleteThose baskets are just gorgeous works of art!
Have a wonderful day!! :)
Cracker maker to the stars!! ;)
DeleteI'm glad you enjoyed seeing the baskets. I should think they're wonderful to experience in person.
It sounds like you are a seriously amazing cook -- shrimp looks great and now crackers? Wow!
ReplyDeleteCrackers are much easier than they seem. And my cooking is pretty simple, but good ingredients always help. Still, thank you for the nice words.
DeleteThose baskets - amazing! Color, shape, texture, materials, story - just wow.
ReplyDeleteSingle-meal shrimp sounds quite wonderful, and you now have me lusting after crackers
Chris from Boise
I really enjoyed seeing the baskets - an art form I haven't tried. And no, I won't be trying it because it would mean a whole 'nother stash and that I simply can't do at this stage of my life.
ReplyDeleteIt's very hard on your hands, too. I think you're better off admiring.
