Happy mother's Day, winnowing sewing materials

Happy mother's Day if you celebrate, otherwise happy Sunday.

I was checking through materials that might be useful to the friends on the Pine Ridge reservation, and I think these pieced patches and strips, and English paper piecing motifs might work.

I'll explain about the card templates. I'm leaving them in, in case anyone wants to join the motifs. They can remove and keep them if they plan to applique them onto another project.   Then they can keep and reuse them.

The lace embroideries will go into my fabric book.

Next I'll go upstairs for bigger pieces of fabric and some tools I'm pretty sure I have in multiples. Then I'll cut down a box I have to a suitable size, and I'll get it sent off.

I did another first today -- changed my bed and did a load of laundry. The grabber stick was in constant use, since I can't reach the back of the dryer at the best of times, too short, and I probably would have been wise to get a grabber years ago.

And I'm learning not to gaily throw sheets, pillows etc on the floor while I'm stripping the bed,  can't retrieve them. The upstairs walker is in use here, to keep them at a reachable level.

It went pretty well, and I finally have a clean bed, and enough clean clothes to continue with.

I still haven't put down the bedside rug or a couple of other small rugs in the house, and maybe I won't. At least not yet.  I don't want to skid.

Saturday morning's walk and laundry, and a bit of gardening, tidying the lavender bush of deadwood, a trip to the mailbox and then the recycling bin with the mailbox contents,  then lunch of crisp roast potatoes and chicken with lime cake and yogurt for dessert, led to an afternoon nap. Now I think about it, not surprising.

Happy day everyone, do what I say not what I do. Don't overdo it. Like I say. But then

  1. Stripping the bed is such an accomplishment. It's a physical workout.

    1. Yes, that's why it's overdue -- till I could do it.

  2. Funnily enough, my doctor and I had a discussion about flooring (carpet vs hardwood)--strange, I know, but the one thing she did say was to not have any throw rugs. Said the tripping factor was just too dangerous and considering I don't seem to lift my feet up as high as I used to do when I walk, I guess she is right. Now, if I can just not trip over the dog whose fur color matches the carpet... :)

    1. The throw rugs are now where I won't walk on them. The tripping hazard is why I didn't replace my last beloved cat. I can't risk not seeing him on the stairs.

  3. Happy Mother's Day! And well done on the bed. I have both hips in order and I still have trouble doing the bed!

  4. Scatter rugs are major trip-and-fall hazards, just sayin'.

  5. Happy Day to you. I hear you about the dryer. Ours is low and deep and a total pain.

    1. It's never been easy for me to get clothes out of the back of the dryer. I think the grabber will eventually live there permanently. And another one downstairs.

  6. I have a horrible mental image now of our Boud tipping herself into the dryer headfirst. The grabber is a good addition! And good for you for managing to do the bedding on your own.

  8. Happy Mothers Day to you! I have my father's gabber and use it to get thing from shelves I can't reach. I'd like to think I learned a lesson last week about over doing, but I doubt it. Have a relaxing day.

    1. Your back hopes you'll remember. I knew grabbers existed but I had no idea how useful they are. I could have used one years ago, trying to get things I dropped awkwardly behind furniture.

  9. I have found that when a grabber is a little more than is needed, a pair of long kitchen tongs works well too.
Once again, you have made me think. This time, about all of the sewing things I have that I NEVER use, mostly things that I inherited from my sister-in-law. Thank you. My life would be less cluttered if I passed them on to someone who might actually use them.

    1. Let me know if you'd like the Pine Ridge address, when you're ready to donate. They'd be thrilled.

    2. I thought of that! I may just hand everything over to Lily who has absolutely inherited her aunt's gene which causes a great need to collect crafting supplies.

  11. Happy Mother's Day to you, too! Can tell you are feeling better. You're getting a lot done. Maybe too much? Please don't overdo it.

Those little throw rugs are dangerous and annoying. I have gotten rid of those but can't not have a cat. If they're the death of me they will just be the death of me, I guess--ROFL! I've been lucky that Allie doesn't trust me not to step on her and gets out of my way and doesn't rub on legs--whew! But you never know when you get a new cat what they'll be like as far as that goes.

I have more trouble getting the clothes out of the top loading washer, being very short on one end. I'll find out (if I ever finally move) what those new front loaders are like. Have never had one. May need a grabber. Actually, could probably use one right now--lol! Thanks for the heads up. ;)

    1. I miss my cats, but cats and stairs don't mix. All mine twined around me at every step, dodged under my feet, etc. My doctors said any patient with pets needs to make arrangements for them if only temporarily.
I have a top loading washer, front loading dryer, same reaching problem with both. The grabber is here to stay.

  12. Very busy. It’s hard to not overdo. When you see what needs attention.
That grabber is a great idea. I have a top loading washing machine and many times I’m half way in trying to grab the last of the laundry

    1. It's important for you to avoid strain, too. Get a grabber! They should pay me commission.

  13. I remember when my mother received a visit from social services to assess her home for safety. The first thing that was said, 'Get rid of the floor rugs and mats'. I had to fill in a questionnaire about my home living conditions to receive some very minor government help, and sure enough, there were questions about floor mats; how many? where? etc. Clearly they are an issue.

    1. My PT commented that I'd already got rid of the mats in front hall, etc. He was about to suggest it, too late! They're not gone, just way out of traffic. I don't need to navigate them. My antique bedside rug is now across the room, looks nice, not in the way. Hall mat in the far corner of the living room where no-one walks. Etc.

  14. I have one of those grabber things but never seem to need it, not yet anyway, but I may do as Mary Moon suggests and get a pair of long barbecue tongs as well.

    1. I used to use kitchen tongs but they weren't as good as gripping. They were okay in a pinch though.
