PT today included a new goal: walking outdoors on the grass, bumpy terrain, slopes. When I ran out of steam, we headed home.
It was great, no need of assists, and next I need to increase stamina, bit by bit, until I'm back to my walk to the pond and the turtles and frogs. This was a definite great new frontier.
Later I did a mailbox run, look at me! This was after I slept on the deck thinking I was reading Howard's End..
About Howard's End, I don't really recommend it if you saw the TV production with Emma Thompson and the Welsh actor whose name always escapes me. Anthony Hopkins, yes.
Forster is able to create intriguing plots on important subjects and great conflict ideas. But he doesn't really know how to handle it. He tends to stop dead at intervals and start telling us how to feel. And he gives away important outcomes ahead of time, the old had I but known approach.
I think if he'd handed his plots over to maybe Trollope, and collaborated, it would have been so much better. Trollope wasn't in the old boy network, but I digress. Anyway that's my take, and I'm stickin with it.
Yesterday I watched Legally Blonde, again, and Legally Blonde II, both great fun.
The second featured Bob Newhart playing a doorman and totally crushing it.
They do address serious issues, sexual harassment, Washington shenanigans and double dealing, but with plenty of pink fluff and it's great fun to watch.
Then today my version of a horror movie. A documentary about the inner workings of a giant cruise ship.
It's a treadmill of work, great tech equipment, meticulous organization, humans working at breakneck speed to accommodate thousands of people partying it up.
Wall to wall people, flashing lights, noise, no escape, floating in the ocean, save me. It was entertaining and as close as I ever plan to come to taking a cruise. I know people who love them, and I say great, go for it. My introverted little hearted will wave you off happily then stroll away to walk, watch birds, think, avoid the neighbors.. I might dance a bit in the kitchen while waiting for the microwave.

A cruise ship is my idea of a horror movie too. One cruise was plenty! Great you’ll be able to do your walks again. The frogs and turtles are waiting.

I have not seen those movies in years. The last time was when my daughter was still living at home.
Ues, it takes time to build up again. You might enjoy revisiting the Blonde movies, very cheering when you need cheering.

DeleteThe only Forster novel I've ever read is "Maurice" which of course was only published after his death because it deal with gay themes.

It was packed with facts, and the engine room was very interesting, also the skills required to dock especially in Miami, very narrow channel.

DeleteMy last corporate job, one of my portfolios was managing major cruise accounts. I HAD TO go on cruises sometimes as part of work. I can’t imagine EVER going on a cruise for a vacation. The people, the packaging, the waste, the pollution, the terrible impact on port cities. The only thing I liked was being on the ocean. Other than that, I am totally anti cruise. Málaga has become a larger cruise port city in recent years and, for me, the city is extremely unpleasant when the cruise ships are in. (Sometimes 3 or 4 at the same time.)

DeleteI've no desire to play sardines, either. The noise from cruise ships can be heard from far away - a 'boom, boom, boom' of the 'music.' It's a holiday camp on the sea and spoils a quiet afternoon's sailing.

ReplyDeleteI have friends who would live on cruise ships if they wouldn't miss their grandchildren and little doggies so much. They love them. Meanwhile, you couldn't pay me enough. I have seen over the years what cruise ships have done to Cozumel, both environmentally and economically and it is not good. Also, watching how American tourists act when they're on a day in port is edifying. Also rather horrifying.
Yes, the impact of thousands of tourists descending on a town all at once. This doc was a British made one and the cruisers were UK partygoers, but just as clueless.

Yes, going on a cruise ship is my idea of a horror movie. They're always depicted as being such wonderful things but then you see pictures of the reality and being packed in like sardines with thousands of other people is my idea of hell.

DeleteWent on one cruise 25 years ago and only did that because of a family request, but made a stipulation I would only go if I had a room with a balcony. I spent 95% of the cruise on my balcony reading. No people. The saving grace. Never again.

DeleteDave and I went on a cruise when my stepmother treated us about ten years ago, and I gotta say, it was pretty great. I found that I could easily be on my own walking the decks or in our cabin, and certainly in port when I got out to explore. I did not lack for alone time! I'm still a bit ambivalent about cruises in general but Dave is now a convert and wants to go on another.

DeleteA cruise sounds ghastly to me, too! Trapped with all those people--awk! My brother and SIL go on a Disney cruise nearly every single year. It is beyond me. No interest whatsoever. I'd rather be home with Allie. :)

DeleteI entirely agree about Howard's End, the book. So much potential there, as you said, but Forster missed. I first read it a couple decades ago and didn't like it. After hearing about other people enjoying it during early COVID times, I tried reading it again but gave up after deciding my first assessment still stood firm! How have I missed Legally Blonde 2? I must watch it! And yes, I'd like never ever ever to go on a cruise. No thanks!
