Sunday afternoon Gary was over for houseplant assistance, to announce yet another trip, and to report on his daughter taking her young daughter to a YouTube influencer event, in a mall, huge.
They were up at dark o'clock to get there, in line for hours. In the end the fire department stopped more crowds from gathering, getting beyond safe. His daughter said she remembered Gary doing this for her at her daughter's age, so she was willing to pass it on.
We both agreed we can't understand what the sound is about, and are baffled at kids singing along. He then got off on the Stones and how he and an earlier wife had gone to a Stones concert way back. And how Jagger is still leaping about the stage! I refrained from saying they're also just a noise to me, realizing I was talking with a major fan.
Adjusting my pioneer bonnet and moving on here..
The cavalry, I mean checks, arrived! Now I can get on with paying my bills. The bank had said Friday but they're days early. Maybe it's that pr idea of giving a stretch date, so the customer is very happy when it arrives early, and refrains from asking in the meantime.
And I will get the replacement heat pump started as soon as they get back to me with a technician appointment. I've requested that Handsome Son make sure the furnace bit in his upstairs storage area is accessible. Knowing him it's probably a bit cluttered with valuable stuff. Which I'd have winnowed years ago but that's me.
Lovely Monday morning walk, met a pretty puppy determined to jump at me and an owner very grateful that I didn't mind.
Some of our neighbors are terrified of dogs jumping, not used to them. I expect it, because very few owners seem to manage to train dogs not to. And this was a young fluffy pup.
I wouldn't have minded playing with him but his owner probably didn't want his training interrupted by being rewarded for jumping.
My flowers may be tapering off, but this house with a different compass direction, is still blooming.

That's the difference between my semi shaded patio and a full unshaded sunny aspect.
When I get my front patio set up, I'm going to have flower containers there, full sun from noon on, and I think they'll do well. I'll also plant in the back as usual, can't have too many flowers.
Happy day everyone, my mental health is much better now the checks arrived and I made the dreaded call to the heat pump people. This year has been full of dramatic events, one way and another, and it's caused a lot of anxiety over seemingly ordinary tasks, such as driving to the library, and making phone calls like the heat pump one. That's over and above the continuing anxiety about the state of the union.
And this in the mail definitely helped my mental health! Gift of a Spoutible friend, sent from As Ever, the company owned by Meghan Duchess of Sussex. Same Meghan who got the Hubb Kitchen cookbook Together going, as a continuing fundraiser. This is her own store.
Everything is qua-li-tee, beautiful presentation and the flavor of this apricot spread -- better than mine!
Tangy enough to be a sauce with Monday evening's breaded fish, sweet enough for breakfast toast. Perfect gift. Meghan aims to bring joy and she definitely did.
Losing no time, here's the set-up for the battered breaded fish. I cut it in small pieces for dipping and set up a production line
And here's supper
There will be three more meals from the cod. It bakes so well, flaky and moist inside the batter and panko. And the dipping sauce was chef's kiss
Yesterday's resistance: Hampton Inn chain,a Hilton medium-cost outfit, is housing ICE in a couple of California cities where they're conducting raids.
I placed phone questions with them, and got baffled bottish answers, not programmed for that. So I'm putting out the word that any Hampton Inn is liable to have burly, masked, heavily-armed men in residence, and may be best avoided by the rest of us. Just sayin'.
Happy day everyone, keep resisting if you live in the US, keep encouraging us if you don't.
It's not easy, especially if you're getting up in years and long only to read and make your art and chat with your friends. A little back pat will go a long way.
I do the same production line when I make my chicken schnitzels, usually about three pounds worth at a time and freeze individual portions for later meals.
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are beautiful.
Yes, we have a similar procedure. Zero waste!
DeleteWith you on the mild to medium anxiety that goes with some life administration and the relief that comes from finally girding loins and making the phone call. I always wonder afterwards why I procrastinated every which way before finally biting the bullet. Tax. Tradespeople. Electricity companies and utilities, car licensing stuff, insurance - it never seems to end.
ReplyDeleteIt's odd, especially when you've been in high phone use in earlier working life. It seems much harder when it's on your own account.
DeleteNo, it’s not easy. You make it a bit better. Glad the cavalry arrived... even if it was bulk rate. The spread and your meal look and sound delicious. We live above an incredible fish market. San Geraldo needs to get in there and buy some fillets. We have our own upscale jam in the fridge.
ReplyDeleteIf I lived above a fish market I think I'd be in there quite a bit. The trick with fish is either fresh or flash frozen, almost as good. Upscale jam, heh!
DeleteCousins brought the jam from Oregon. The fish downstairs is either fresh, brought up from the Mediterranean Sea or flash frozen. It looks beautiful.
DeleteI like the term 'stretch date'. It describes well what often happens, the worst case scenario, which is a cumbersome phrase.
ReplyDeleteDogs jumping up with clean paws, fine. Dogs jumping up with dirty paws, not on, but the dogs don't know.
As I get older, I more and more dislike talking over the phone, and you are not always able to take in everything. This is why I like things written, but companies don't like to put things in writing.
I wonder if the Hampton Inn chain still has staff?
I'm small and a big dog jumping can knock me down. Even little Billie can trip me by running her leash around my ankles! So I proceed with caution.
DeleteUnfinished tasks, like unpaid bills, prey on the mind and it's surprising what a relief it is when they're resolved.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to hear about the apricot spread/conserve/jam - worth all the hype?
Yes, the spread definitely lived up to expectations. And I hate unpaid bills, especially to individuals like Marvelous Mike. He was very nice about the delay, but I felt bad.
DeleteSpeaking of making art, it’s foggy out this morning, and I should be out taking pictures. But I’m not motivated to do that anymore.
ReplyDeleteI can't see a time when I won't be motivated to make art.
DeleteGood to read that your mental state has improved, Boud, especially with the arrival of the checks and apricot spread. It’s these not-so-little things that can make a day better in spite of everything else. The news about the Hampton Inn chain was disturbing as we have an upcoming reservation in PA.
ReplyDeleteNot so little -- exactly.
DeleteCan you rethink that reservation?
Thank you for your research on the Hampton Inn. I will avoid.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for doing your bit against this particular form of fascism.
DeleteYou, my friend, offer light every time you post, so that's a rather fitting meme. Good information about the Hampton Inn - everybody should be boycotting them at all costs. Obviously the ownership doesn't have enough gumption to tell the icicle people to take a hike.
ReplyDeleteGlad your cheques arrived and a sweet treat too. Lovely gift that will be enjoyed many times over.
Hampton inns are Hilton owned. $$ screams! They're probably on the side of what ICE is doing. But loss of bookings might have an impact. Look at Target!
DeleteSuffering anxiety over "the little things" is horrible because life is one little thing after another, interrupted only by big things.
ReplyDeleteFlowers can help and no, there are never too many.
Meditation comes in useful. Also square breathing.
DeleteI got an email this week to "Save the Date" for another big No Kings protest.
ReplyDeleteHere's the notice with a link for people to sign up:
"On October 18 we say No Kings."
https://www.nokings.org/?SQF_SOURCE=indivisible
Thanks for your help in spreading the word!
And thank you for your work. And service.
DeleteThis is a wonderful post. I'm with you on the "noise" I was never a Stones fan. Your are right most people just don't train their dogs. I was a Vet Tech and only a handful of people had dogs that behaved. The photos are so pretty. Ohh that Apricot jam looks so good. We are having cod tonight. It was on sale yesterday so I go 5lbs. This makes many meals for us. As for resistance..... we must go forward. What ever a person can do. Ellen is correct about Oct. 18. I will pass the word about the hampton inn. I wonder where else they are staying. I'm gong to check this out.
ReplyDeleteCod is a great meal. A bit expensive -- why I buy bits, cheaper -- but so good.
DeleteGood idea to check out ICE lodgings, why make it easy for them.
So glad those checks arrived early! Relieving stress is always good.
ReplyDeleteLovely flowers--I bet your new patio is going to look colorful and green, too.
That was a really "sweet" gift...pun intended. That fish looks delicious.
Keep the news tucked away in the back of your mind and have a peaceful day.
Good advice that last sentence. Yes, I will.
DeleteI inspire me Boud. Thank you for that. I'm trying to speak about the shit that's going on in my province, but it wears me down some days, like today. Another day dragging my butt around.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing your new little seating area, complete with plants and flowers. Next year I want to work on my garden more, this year got away from me:)
I meant to say, you inspire me Boud. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI read it as intended, and thank you. Some days it's too much and you need to rest.
DeleteThis is a lovely gift. Such a thoughtful friend. Those flowers in front of that house are very pretty.
ReplyDeleteShe's a lovely woman, walks the walk.
DeleteIt warms this gal’s heart to hear of Your good times and plans for more flowers! A very good day!
ReplyDeleteYou're so generous to say this when you're under the weather yourself. Thank you.
DeleteThat's a beautiful sunny garden! And the apricot spread looks terrific. I'm glad to hear Meghan's having some success at something -- to hear the media reports she and Harry have struggled with their ventures since leaving royal duties.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who is following their actual successes knows they're absolutely doing fine. Mass media in the UK has been, bluntly, lying about them since they left. They've been winning awards, Netflix contracts, doing excellent work fundraising for charity and more.
