Saturday saw the completion of the house repairs, but first

Up early Saturday morning, cool, great for walking, I went to the pond.

Here's the neighbor's hibiscus, more mature than mine, but it also goes to dry sticks over winter

Here's my hibiscus

And the morning glories forming a lovely vertical focal point with the hibiscus.

I was out on the deck quite a while, since the butterfly bush casts enough morning shade now. I used to watch those fancy gardening shows where people with large gardens and even larger budgets planted endlessly, making all kinds of outdoor rooms.

The one useful thing I learned was to remember to have at least one vertical focal point. I could do that without a big budget or garden, and it does make the place work better as a design, or as near as most of us come to it. This year its morning glories rivalled by hibiscus. Posh stuff.

Then the contractors arrived and it was all drills and saws and blowers all day. Visits from various neighbors interested in the goings on.

New flooring in the kitchen, some fancy high tech clicky plank stuff, all the room painted, exterior completely done, with extra paint job thrown in on a part of the wood that the HOA painters had patched badly. Now it looks great.

They also fixed my storm door which was slumping on the hinges after being opened and slammed hundreds of times over the last few days. Now it closes normally.

All the players departed mid afternoon, leaving me desperate for a cup of tea, having had no access to the kitchen.  That, and a snack on the deck, were just right.

I'm so glad it's done, my car's home, and I can start organizing the kitchen once the paint's dry.  Saturday evening was about planning this with my feet up and handy beverages.

Floor in progress

I don't care how much they pay them, it's not enough

Clearing up ready to go

The older man facing us is the crew chief who went to endless trouble over every detail. Next month he's visiting his parents in Brazil and he told me I reminded him of his Mami. When they left I asked him to say hi to her from me.

Left, his back to us, the multi talented man who prepped and painted the kitchen then installed the floor. The other man did exterior work up and down ladders all week.

New kitchen floor, temp curtain, a length of embroidered sari (!)

The paintwork and the flooring make the old cabinets look much better.

Here's how the stucco is drying in the sun and matching its surroundings

From across the street it's blending in as it dries.

And here's where I had another idea

You see the lack of vegetation between cars and people tromping over it, demolishing the daisies, daylilies and daffodils. Well, maybe this can work better.

See Gary's similar area next door. A few pavers, a couple of chairs maybe a bistro table, and I'd have a nice little area. Also it would keep ants out of the house if there's no vegetation up against the foundation.

I haven't mentioned this to him yet, but I bet he'd help. He loves stuff like this.

Happy day everyone, caution, woman with ideas in the area.

  1. Boud, the kitchen and exterior look fantastic. That crew did excellent work, and I'm sure were happy to be appreciated. Nice patio focal point, and a creative way to use that now-trampled spot. I bet Gary will leap at the chance to help. And a pond walk to boot! Your weather must have moderated a bit.

    1. They got all flustered when I told them (as did a couple of neighbors) how happy I was with their work! Their English was sparse so I stuck to words like happy, beautiful, good work etc!
The weather is cool and bright, wonderful for everything!

  2. I'm sure he's been in that situation hundreds of times in the past, but I want to shout out to that man on the ladder(s): "Be Careful!"

    1. He's the crew chief, did the hard parts himself, but I couldn't watch this bit.

  3. What a fabulous 'new' kitchen. I love the green - green is such a restful colour. You must be so pleased with the end result; some compensation for all the stress.

    1. Yes, I like the green. I had them copy the old color which I loved. Which I'd painted myself with a gallon of paint I found at the dumpster (!)

  4. A good thing, woman with ideas!!
A job done well... including the clearup!
I like your old cabinets...natural wood every time for me 🙂

    1. They left the place completely broom clean. Most of my neighbors long since replaced these cabinets but I continue to like them.

  7. The work looks exceptional. So nice when the crew is so kind, skilled, and diligent. You now have the most structurally sound corner in the complex. I love your idea for a little patio. The morning glory is morning glorious.

    1. I'd say yes, best built and painted! The crew definitely gave me the grandma treatment! As in oh, anything for you, abuela! Very kind and courteous.

  8. What a relief to have it all done and your house to yourself again. Good workmen make the whole business so much more bearable, but constant company can be too much.

  11. Thanks for the summary of the work they did. Now you can get back to your normal life again! Plus having new feelings in your kitchen due to moving things back into it. Loved the idea of a garden needing something vertical...somehow I'd never heard that.

    1. Often there's a tree providing the vertical touch, but if you have a flat flower bed, it looks a lot better with some tall planting. Hollyhocks are the secret of great cottage gardens. Now you know why!

  12. I never really thought about vertical focal points, but interestingly enough, seem to have done that anyway. At this point, I am just putting plants in the ground and what lives will be rearranged next year when I have more time. I had beautiful blue morning glories. The did not re-seed.

It is amazing how the stucco dries to match.

And women should always be filled with ideas. And if we are lucky, our good ideas will out number our bad ideas!

  13. Yes. Absolutely fantastic work. And that was truly fast. I am not sure I've ever heard of any sort of construction coming to completion on the actual estimated day.
I think we're going to use the clicky flooring in the cabin. It is easy to install and supposed to be very durable.

I hear good things about this flooring. Its the same material as pvc piping. Won't dent.

  16. They did good work on your place. The floor looks great and I love green walls, most of the walls on the main floor of my house are green, yellow in the kitchen , and seafoam in the bathroom/laundry room. I love colour.
Thanks for the tip about gardening, vertical interest. I'm in the middle of rearranging most of my gardens, everything overgrown, gone wild, so it's good to have a plan. I have a hard time editing my garden:)

  17. Wow! They did a great job. And to finish early--that is amazing!
I also love wood cupboards. The green looks great...and having new flooring, too. Like having it all redecorated and fresh. Nice!
I think having a little patio outside is a great idea. You'll have to let us know what Gary thinks and if he'll help.

  18. It turned out great and I'm glad you are so relieved to have it done. Your idea for the pavers and chairs out front will look good. Once you get one part fixed up, it always makes you think of other things that should be spruced up. ;)

  22. It all looks great! It looks like you have a great opportunity to get some pavers in there and a chair. We need more outdoor sitting spots. More places to sit quietly and enjoy nature. Or the comings and goings of people...

Your hibiscus is a showstopper! We never managed to get them to grow to any size. Your 'woman with ideas' plan sounds like a great addition to your outdoor space and I'll bet Gary will be all gung ho to help accomplish it.
