I wasn't up to anything much physically, other than falling asleep whenever I sat down, so I wrote the day off for walking and exercising.
The deck was lovely, all kinds of birds and insects and this accidental art which looks like an impressionist setup, the dappled shade and the multiple patterns
Then while I was reading Trollope and resting my eyes, Michael the artist -contractor came over with the renovated base cabinet and the slider he built.
Tomorrow he'll install it, and I can stop working out of a crate of baking gear. It's beautifully finished, refurbished drawer now sliding in and out smoothly, I'm just very happy with it. What an improvement on the old cabinet.
That geared me up to making a plum crumble using all the rest of the plums. The crumble is oatmeal, some of which I ground to flour, some I left as is. Drizzle of molasses over the top. Usual nutmeg, cinnamon, butter, salt in the crumble. In the fruit there's cornstarch to thicken it, lemon zest, cinnamon, no sugar, I like it tart.
And here's the cook's first taste. With Greek yogurt and a sprinkle of sugar.
He also brought a new set of locks, plain brass finish with keys. No codes and videos and Benny Hill music. He'll install them Tuesday.
Foyle is now working for MI5 and still trying to retire to Hastings to go fishing. Some wartime colleagues show up in new secret jobs, and if they didn't shoot so many scenes in near darkness I'd manage to follow it better.
Most of the secret men are in raincoats and hats, I have no hope of knowing who's who. But it's still good watching, including the terrible cardigans women were wearing, and austerity shoes. Women in their twenties looked about fifty in those big felt hats, designed to repel boarders.
This was before the New Look came in, when skirts became long, bodices were fitted, and women looked pretty good if they could save the coupons to get a new outfit, big if at that time, clothes rationed for years.
The puzzle is still in the box. Maybe Tuesday.
Happy day everyone, don't worry if the puzzle's still in the box. To every puzzle there is a season or something.
It seems to be the thing these days; embittered old fogey me now gives up on any series where I can't actually see what's going on... maybe our tv (now classified as bedroom size) is too small! But no way am I planning to mount a giant screen over the fireplace...
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they're saving on lighting costs??
DeleteI hate taking allergy pills for just that reason. Sometimes, for me, the cure is worth than the original symptoms. The accidental art is wonderful, even the shadowy photo of the redone cabinet. I’ve heard that about puzzles... or it was about something else, but I’ve heard it.
ReplyDeleteYes, familiar quotation, can't quite put my finger on it..the rebuilt cabinet with new slider insert is lovely. His work is really fine.
DeleteDear Boud 🥰
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your sharing thoroughly 🤗
I am glad that your slider and new locks are ready to get installed 👍
It’s relieving when some due job is done ☺️
I liked the art pattern you found during your walk,I also find dancing shades so interesting and fascinating 🥰
Omg your oatmeal dish sounds too good and delicious, healthy too certainly 👌🥰
The series you mentioned seems nice with characters wearing old fashioned outfits 🤗
Much more goodness to you my friend 🥰♥️🙏
Thanks so much, Baili, for reading with interest!
DeleteI like Michael Kitchen, though there are some characteristic acting 'tics' that appear from time to time. My brother-in-law's wife taught his daughter.
ReplyDeleteThe jigsaw looks inviting.
What did she teach her? I love kitchen, that quiet voice demolishing objections.
DeleteMost subjects in primary school.
DeleteIt seems like a pretty good day despite the health issue.
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely good parts.
DeleteIt looks like it will be a fun puzzle to do -- nice picture!
ReplyDeleteI must try and get it out of the box.
DeleteChanging a bed is enough effort for one day. I'm pleased you are happy with your new cabinet.
ReplyDeleteThank you, loyal friend! I was hoping someone would say that, about changing the bed. The cabinet is so much better than the earlier version.
DeleteEnjoy puzzling whenever its time may come. Kitchen is great, and I'm watching it on Prime so have subtitles, which sometimes catch the quick statements that are so important, but given in the King's tongue such that I go "huh?" and am glad I can rewind (now there's a lost term, eh?) and figure out what was said. So they are wearing (1942) some huge plaid coats (men and women) that surprised me. Huge plaids I mean. I'd never seen those before.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they're blanket coats? Blankets weren't rationed like clothing, so people made warm coats from them. My mother used to say scornfully they looked like horse blankets! Those quick two word comments which carry so much meaning, arghgh!
DeleteSorry the allergies are bothering you. Will cooler Fall weather help get rid of that? We've had some lovely cooler days here and so it makes walking a treat.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that will help is the first killing frost, usually late October. A while to go yet.
DeleteI just love your new sliding base cabinet. I am wondering how I've existed all these years without such a thing. How much frustration it would have solved!
ReplyDeleteWhy not include one or more in your house reno? I have sliders in place of the dishwasher, and love them.
DeleteI must admit I've never come across Foyle's War although I think it was aired as a series on tv a number of years ago. Perhaps it was on a channel we couldn't get.
ReplyDeleteYour 'new' cupboard looks like it will be very functional. We're still waiting (over a month now) for our new cabinet to arrive. I'm giving them another week and then I'll rattle their cage. In the meantime opening a drawer in the current cabinet can be a real adventure in will it/won't it (close, that is).
You might be able to borrow DVDs from your library. That's what I'm doing.
DeleteThe new cabinet will be so great to use after that awkward builder design one.
I just checked Foyles war in YouTube and it's there. So if you fancy it, you can check it out. I know Irene loved it, but I don't know how she accessed it.
DeleteYes, we can get DVD's from our library but we don't have a means to play them. We bought a player several years ago and couldn't manage to get it to marry up with our tv so we got rid of it. How we miss having our techy son living close enough to figure these things out for us.
DeleteHe made your cabinet useful! He's a very good neighbor. I heard of Foyle War but have not watched it. I have wild plums in the freezer, hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to have a professional contractor across the street. And he gives me the best rate he can
DeleteThinking of making a plum crumble?
Oh I am with you on dark scenes and actors all looking the same and then mumbling - I have to watch everything with subtitles these days - it is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThat about sums up most older people's viewing!
DeleteThe cabinet looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteAllergy medicine can make you so groggy...but then you can breathe to fall asleep and take naps, so that's a plus--lol!
Your crumble looks yummy and good show to watch--what more can one want. ;)
Yes, the good news is that I have time to sleep. No more forcing myself through a long day's work!
DeletePlum crumble sounds delicious!
DeleteMay
I do like your very impressionist first photo. It would make a great painting!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm wondering if I should read Trollope this fall instead of my annual Dickens. I've never read "Barchester Towers."
I much prefer Trollope because he doesn't take himself too seriously and he breaks through to address the reader. His characters are very human, unlike the drama kings and queens of Dickens, beloved of scenery chewing actors. Trollope's characters appeal to great acting intelligence. I may be a trifle biased here.
DeleteMolasses is a fun add to bakes. I love to add it to baked breads too.
ReplyDeleteMolasses is my secret weapon. I think it has various good trace elements, too.
DeleteFunny how impressionistic reality can be, as that photo reminds us.
ReplyDeleteThe impressionists changed how we see.
DeleteReading backwards as I catch up, now I see why you are so delighted with the new cabinet. What a practical solution!
ReplyDeleteChris from Boise
It's working very well, too. So easy now to find baking items.
