Back to the pond, Texas snitchline, baking and Alaska

1-866-786-5972. Texas snitchline, I mean tipline. Just sayin'. I'm supplying you with sand here. Especially if you're in Texas.

I made it to the pond Friday, hot but manageable and not too wet underfoot. Frogs basking on the banks screamed and flew through the air into the water. Some already in the shallows with heads out, just watched me quietly.

The Friday duffers were out on the golf course. I'd already found and shied back a golf ball far out of bounds. Good thing there's a belt of trees outside the boundary. I hear shots rattling off them before they land near me. There's a great Wooster and Jeeves scene like that, ball ricocheting wildly and Bertie ducking.

And the cooking requirements of the day, spinach quiche and plum torte, both need the same oven temperature I find. So why not do both at once. In my two Corningware pie dishes.

They'll both work to avoid cooking for several days.

The quiche is crustless, as I like it, so it needs a lot of eggs, five, to hold it together.

The torte, look up Marian Burros if you want to bake it, really needs 12 small prune plums halved.  We rarely see them, so I use whatever plums I can find in August, plum time.  These are larger, so I cut them in quarters and all the plum quarters that fit got in there.

Sprinkled with lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon, seen here,  as the quiche comes out, the torte goes in.

Here's the baked plum torte with the quiche, missing the piece I had for lunch. I used sharp cheddar and crumbled feta for the cheese component, very good combo, which added salt.

Afternoon tea with a murder matinee and plum torte.

And I decided to make a dessert of key lime yogurt with plums

Meanwhile Alaska was on it, protests everywhere

Not a bad day in the kitchen. Or in defence of democracy in Alaska.  Some of the signs they carried were great.

Happy day everyone, keep finding and applying sand. We can do this. Next, since creating is resisting, I need to choose and frame the artwork for the fall group show. We can do this, sez Ted and Big Ursy

    1. That published while I was typing. Yes, all their moc are gop. But with a population so small, 750k approx, they only have one House seat.

    1. They were a happy coincidence, with finding out they used the same oven temp.

  4. Lots of words from the Orange One about Alaska, all saying precisely nothing. He will attempt to bully Zelenskyy into ceding the invaded land to Russia. It makes my blood boil.
On a lighter note, tasty dishes, by the way.

  7. You've made beautiful looking tasty food! I had to laugh because I have 2 corning ware bread pans...which don't look anything as pristine as your pie pans...lots of burned on oil still.

    1. These have held up well over decades of use, unlike some of my corningware which got unfixably stained. Not sure why these always come up well.

  8. I’m definitely going to look up the plum tort. I always try and cook multiple dishes when I have the oven on. You save energy and you have left overs for the next day.

    1. I think you'll like the torte. I'm planning to look at my favorite foods to see which use the same oven setting, for future use.

  9. I did the same with my dinner last night- three things in the oven at once. Baked potatoes, a small meatloaf, and for the last twenty minutes corn still in the husk. I like it when I can do that. I haven't made quiche in a long time. I should think about that. I have some broccoli languishing in the refrigerator.

    1. I normally do that when it's all one meal. But I'm now checking into different meals that can cook together, now that I noticed this combo.

  10. I was glad to see the protests in Alaska. I'm going to another one today and there is one coming up for Labor Day weekend that I will do.
    Your food looks yummy!

  11. I usually leave out the crust, too. Not because I prefer it but because I don't feel like making a crust. The food looks good and it's a great use of energy using the oven for multiple baking.

    1. I don't like crust. In fact I don't like pie as much as crumble, because of the crust. So this recipe, really a Passover workaround, suits me fine.

  13. Your plum torte looks like the clafoutis I make. I've been wanting to try plums and one of these days I will.

    1. The sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon sprinkled on top form a crust, then the cake is tender and the plums tart. It's a lovely thing. Yes, try it with whatever plums you can get, but not Victoria plums, too sweet I think.

    1. I expect there are plenty of golf balls in the pond since it's on the golf course.

  16. The quiche and torte both look delicious and I'm reminded of the plum cakes my dad used to make, basic butter cake recipe with sliced plums on top sprinkled with sugar, baked in a slice pan.
I don't understand the "sand" reference for Texas, can you explain that please?

    1. It sounds just like what I made, really good but easier than you'd think. The expression putting sand in the gears refers to resistance against any hostile force or attempted takeover. In rl sand brings an engine to an agonizing halt! So when I'm providing sand, it means I'm offering people an immediate way to resist.

  17. The orange idiot's comment recently about making Alaska a state was just one more in a long line of stupid comments he's come up with. Hope lots of people visit that snitchline and put lots of sand in his boxer shorts.

    1. Alaska is a state. The snitchline is not federal, strictly Texas. But I did have fun reporting the crime wave in the White House.

    2. I know Alaska is a state but obviously the orange idiot has no idea.
