Judge John Deed and dreams around the solstice

Yesterday was busy, what with food prep,  walking, exercises including weight training in the evening, garden consult with Gary. So as usual I'm surprised that I'm tired today, why does it keep surprising me.

I was up at five, breakfasting, thinking about walking to celebrate the solstice, then reading an old favorite, Heyer's Faro's Daughter, then I woke up mid morning, having apparently slept through my plans.

I had wonderful dreams about a huge building that seemed to comprise all the parts of my life, with helpful people.

I dreamed I arranged a gallery show of small prints which I'd visualized and was going to execute. I woke to realize the gallery director and even the building are long gone. It was a hyper realistic dream and took me a minute to reorient myself to the day. The Dream as Memory Lane. La vida es sueno. Either way.

I did eventually get a walk, on a beautiful after-the-storm day, puffy clouds, wind, warm sunshine. Around here I didn't see any damage, but at the condo just five minutes away,  there's siding torn off, trees down and chainsaws in action after a wild night.

Here it's more like this

The Montauk daisies needed water, because despite the overnight storm, they were sheltered by the roof overhang. I pulled out some lemon balm here and there and will toss it when I get my energy back.  I garden in short bursts now, getting the hang of it.

I've started watching the Judge John Deed series and I'm really liking it again. I love the actor who plays Deed, warm, thoughtful, but a renegade all the same.

The premise that such a man, however brilliant and well connected, could get to be a UK High Court judge, that stuffiest of institutions, is shaky, but I was up for the willing suspension of disbelief in the service of fun and rule breaking.

He's also a very intelligent character. This wins me every time. Foyle, Mrs Bradley, Lewis, Holmes, Maisie Dobbs,  Maigret, Miss Fisher, it's the intelligence.

Update on the insurance question I got from the neighbor the other day -- he got a quote for coverage from my insurer,  for half the premium proposed by the company he'd started checking with. Same coverage. As far as we know, good response to claims.  So he's a happy neighbor, glad he asked.

Food update: the second day of tofu katsu, the aqua faba makes a crisper coating than the flour and water coating. I like it but it might be too brittle for some tastes.

And I find that adding lime juice and cane sugar to Greek style yogurt gives you a definite key lime pie filling lookalike. I may try this with lemon juice too, to simulate lemon filling.

Happy day, everyone, play with your food.

  1. Happy Solstice!
Power naps are like resets. They always feel to me, like waking up the next day.

  2. We watched and enjoyed Deed about 20 years ago. It was enjoyable at the time. I am not sure if it is the type of show that I could watch again.

  3. Martin Shaw (actor) is also good in Gently (inspector George Gently).

    1. He's good. I talked about Gently a couple of days ago in here.

  4. It's so good to hear about your days with so much activity. After being forced into a slower routine by pain and difficulty in walking, knowing that you're back at it makes me feel happy.

    1. It's a treat to be just doing things without gritting my teeth at every step! That was no life for a person.

  5. I’ve never seen Deed and I think I would like it. I’ll see if I can get it. We just started the final season of Outlander. Your photo of the day are beautiful. I’m afraid I need a bit of a push right now.

    1. Let us know if you find Deed and like it. I've never seen Outlander though several friends have liked it. I should see what it's about.
I'm I no position to offer a push after being asleep more than awake today!

  6. No wonder you were tired - you were up at 5! I like detective series like the ones you mentioned.
I took my brother for a drive to our old neighborhood so it was very pleasant recalling old memories. My brother is beginning to suffer from dementia but this was a good day for us. This afternoon I got my Covid vaccine so I'm all set for another 6 months. Didn't feel a thing!

  7. I am going to see if I can watch Judge John Deed here in the USA. I do like intelligent honorable main characters. I love the Maigret series starring Bruno Cremer. He is very thoughtful and kind.

  8. Friday IS play with your food day here. I made some Hot Honey a little while ago. We'll see how it tastes after it's rested a bit. And tonight is "fix up frozen pizza" night. I can't wait to see what I come up with.

  9. What good dreams you had! The kind you WANT to go to sleep for!

    1. It was a mixture of real life people and some who only appear in dreams. Places likewise.

  10. Yes, it's been storming where I am too. And when it's not, it's very cloudy. Odd way to begin the summer.

    1. The cloudiness is unusual, but it makes cool mornings, so there's that.

  11. I've just finished Maisie Dobbs.
John Deed certainly stretches credibility, but it's the story that counts. Foyle is very credible.

    1. There's a whole series of Maisie Dobbs, advancing through time. Plenty of places that strain credulity there, too, but I love the stories.

  12. I occasionally have one of those really intense dreams. And it stays with me for days, trying to work out what it meant.
    I’ve started watching the crown.
I’m late to that, and I have many seasons to catch up on
Since we have just had the winter solstice, it’s good to just sit on the couch snuggled under a quit, bingeing a series.
It’s this time of he yeqr that I catch up on stuff people have been talking about for months ( or years)

    1. I'm usually a late starter, too. I watched three seasons of The Crown on DVD. After that I think they' streamed, so I called it a day. Three seasons was enough. Same with Downton Abbey -- the nearer they got to the present the less I was interested. But I loved the early seasons, and fashions. And cars.

  13. I'm always surprised when someone says they remember their dreams. I rarely do although I know I dream because sometimes I wake up in the middle and wish I could go back. Sadly by the time I wake up thoroughly I don't remember any of it. Glad you didn't have any damage from the storm.

    1. Deed is a lot less dark and more fun than Gently. My take, anyway.

  17. Ah, sounds like the aqua faba might be too brittle for me for the tofu katsu. As for the Greek yogurt with lime and sugar, what if I sprinkle some crushed graham crackers atop it? That would nearly be a pie in a dish! Thanks for your food play report.
