Freecycle and Misfits, it's all go

Thursday morning I found a Freecycle offer I had to try for. First I checked that the heatwave had moved on

This required a walk, and I made it easily to the pond, stamina returning, and you see the drakes aren't panicking now when I show up. 



All the circles in the water are frogs landing. They drifted about, eyes above the water, checking.

This tree is about halfway home, in early morning sun.

I found branches down from the trees, after the recent storms, including this lovely beech twig, playing the part of the daily bouquet.

Below are the Dollivers.

Then I checked the Freecycle offer, sugar, probably somebody trying to eliminate it, having stockpiled. I use sugar in moderation, so, fine for me. And it turned out to be only five minutes away.

Here it is in the freezer now, white, dark brown and confectioner's, a lifetime supply.

 I'll probably also share it around. I expect the Food Pantry can use some. I'll check first, to make sure.

Going to collect was like old times, quite a while since I was up to Freecycling, other than leaving items for pickup.

Then, it's all go, there was Quinn bringing Misfits.

Wonderful peak season produce, the carrots sweet as sugar, berries at prime, peppers large and lovely, Envy apples available again, yellow potatoes for roasting.

Graham crackers for faux key lime pie, yogurt same, strawberries, there might be jam or sauce, apricots same, sardines for fast sandwiches with capers and olives, summer food reigns.

There may be carrot cake with yogurt frosting. Stay tuned.

I did another workout last night with April and her mom, a walking workout,the equivalent of a mile, indoors with a lot of varied additional moves. This was all cardio, since the previous day was weights. It definitely showed up in the ease of walking this morning.  It's paying off. 

I've used up most of my cordage for the little basket, so I'll have to make more. I'm off to damp down some of my dried daylilies, so I can work the fibers without breaking them. I'm very glad I remembered this project, just fits right now, as Jeannie would agree.

  2. Regarding Misfits, do you have an input into what you are delivered?
    Miss Fitz, from the suburb of Fitzroy, was the name of a drag queen here.

    1. Misfits is an online grocery source, rescuing surplus or sized-out organic and other food. I order each week from the huge range of what's available. They either send what I order or refund for the rare time they run out of an item. There's a minimum order level which is easily reached. And I add a driver tip each week.
      I don't think there's a drag connection!

  3. That’s a lot of sugar.
    I don’t use much either unless I bake or use it in preserves.
    Your really getting fit now. I hope the hip is playing nice for you

    1. Quite a bit of the sugar is destined for the food pantry. The rest will probably last my lifetime. I've acted as the middle person before, passing free cycled goods in excellent condition, unopened, to the local food pantry. It's easier than explaining to freecyclers.
      The hip is doing really fine now. I'm fitter than in years.

  4. It's always all systems go in your neck of the woods. My sister was like that, always busy, hands and brain.
    Carrot cake sounds wonderful - one of my favourites.

    1. Yes, I do like doing, even when I resolve to do nothing! This is the first time I've made carrot cake and I see why it's special. All that grating.

    1. I think the animals are remembering I don't do anything scary. It had been a long time since I'd been there. Or maybe it's even a new generation getting the hang of it. At any rate, when I hold up my phone for a photo they seem to know it won't go bang.
      I was grating carrots and eating the little ends, very good, so sweet. Maybe the best I've had to date.

    1. One time before I've got a supply of food from this nice woman. I think she over stocks then rethinks. I shared that haul around, too.

    1. I like all the videos I've seen from them. It's a change to see an actual older woman, in her eighties, not an athlete, following the routines her daughter is teaching.

    Do you ever roast carrots and potatoes with lots of peeled, whole cloves of garlic? I love those flavors together.

  12. Great score on the sugar! We put our packages into zip loc bags and that keeps them from absorbing the humidity in the air. No room for it in the small freezer we have. We use 'real' sugar for baking but pretty much always cut the amount by at least half.

    1. I find a lot of cake recipes, especially traditional ones, are very heavy on sugar. I use it in moderation.

  14. I finally threw away the brick of brown sugar I’d had for years…and then when making chocolate chip cookies, I just used some molasses…everyone liked them just fine. I did have to change the level of wet/dry ratio a bit, but they didn’t spread much so I guess it worked. Living where humidity prevails limits what can be stored for long.

    1. Yes, sugar is a humidity magnet. I do like the flavor of molasses, too.

  15. The 'Dollivers'. That's great. I can't remember the last time that I had to buy sugar. Certainly it has been since Christmas, but we don't use a lot of it around here anymore.
