I finally found an exterminator, and to my amazement, they were able to send a technician Friday morning.
I got up and ready early, just as well, because Joel the Exterminator texted at a bit after seven to say he was on his way. I had to dash over and let him in, Handsome Son having left for work long before.
He inspected, found no evidence of roaches or activity, did a precautionary spray of the baseboards, and was done, leaving me with a report for the HOA, by nine. Soooo I forwarded it to them, got an acknowledgement and that's done. Except they still have to invoice me, technicians not being involved with payments. Whatever it costs I expect it will be too much.
Next to get the car in to the dealer for the fuel pump sensor recall I've been trying to get done for two years, difficult because they haven't had the parts. I want it checked over before winter anyway. Next week I'll set it up. No use asking on a Friday, I know from past experience.
After all this, and a flying visit to the food pantry to leave canned goods, I decided reading a nice murder mystery on the sofa, cup of tea, afghan, was fine.
The wind was shrieking round, making it feel a lot colder and I decided not a walking day. I did a bunch of sit to stands with weights, and declared myself fit enough.
Happy day everyone, I avoided Halloween, aside from admiring the kids in costumes, again. I really can't handle the scary images and general feeling.
I grew up with it as a quiet day of remembering our dead, and have never made the transition to seeing it as partying.
But if you enjoyed it I won't spoil your fun. Different strokes, folks, etc.
And blink, October's over. How did that happen?

I avoid everything Halloween too; I'm easily scared! Roaches in Indonesia are called kuckalucks, if I remember, and were ENORMOUS. Like the length of my thumb. Back in the 1970s the whole house used to get sprayed with DDT every month... and the bedrooms with Flit every night. How come I'm still alive?
ReplyDeleteI remember the smell of Flit! How did we survive breathing that stuff after your mom had been round with the Flit gun? In our case mainly flies and mosquitoes.
Deleteone more blink and it will be Christmas. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteNobody to mention Cmas till my December birthday has passed!
DeleteSorry to snoop in the exterminator photo but I love the two artworks on Handsome Son’s wall. Interesting the car maker would have the recall and the dealership wouldn’t have the part. Nice that nothing has blown up. I, too, have a hard time with the ghoulish aspect of Halloween which is what modern Halloween is really about.
ReplyDeleteI'll let him know you like them. I think he has some nice taste in art. His budget runs to posters, which is what I think these are. I'm glad I'm not alone in not liking Halloween. Honda has had supply chain issues and central drives dealers mad by insisting customers get the fix done, even when it isn't possible.
DeleteIt is strange when we talk of enjoying a nice murder, but we know what we mean, usually something very 'English' in an untouched bucolic corner (for me, anyway!)
ReplyDeleteYes, and touches of humor, too. All very unlikely!
DeleteI like Elly Griffiths but got caught up with her come time ago although I except she has written one or two more since then. British murders are ever so gentle and relaxing. 😀
ReplyDeleteYes, British murders are polite!
DeleteI wasn't ready for November and yet here it is. I didn't do anything for Halloween other than take photos of Lego Halloween minifigures.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind scary stuff, but just had other things to do yesterday like boxing up clothes to take to a free will store.
I was preoccupied with scary roaches! That's halloweeny enough for me.
DeleteI must admit I'm grateful that we don't have to shell out anymore because I've never been a fan of Halloween.
ReplyDeleteVery glad that there was no evidence of 'critters' but preventative measures are always good. Sounds like the process he used is quite different from what happened here. We were told we had to remove everything out of the cupboards, pull the furniture away from the wall and cover everything and then everything had to be washed before being put back in the cupboards. Seemed excessive when we had no evidence of having any in our unit.
It sounds as if they were doing an all critter elimination! I got off easy. It's particularly annoying when you are conscientious about food, etc and don't have the issue in the first place. Or any other place.
DeleteTell me more about the book. Is it part of a series (Magic Men) or another? Mystery or thriller?
ReplyDeleteIt's really good, gang of ill assorted friends deciding to investigate the death of an old lady they all knew, plus there's a female, gay, Sikh police officer (checking numerous boxes)! I think it's a standalone but I'd like more adventures with this crew. It's similar to the thursday night Club, and that English one where crosswords and cryptic clues feature. They all have old people in important roles, a plus to many of us.
DeleteAnd now I find it's the second in a series, so this is good if I can find the others. Harbinder Kaur is the police officer.
DeleteI enjoyed Halloween as a child. I mean- candy! Now I could care less but I am happy for the kids who are still young enough to love it.
ReplyDeleteMost of the kids around here are older now, teens. Not the cute little skeletons and dinosaurs like the library group.
DeleteI enjoy a pot of tea after a nice murder too!
ReplyDeleteYes, after your tools are cleaned and put away, you're ready for a cuppa.
DeleteOne of my grandsons was Harry Potter and the other was a policeman so nothing scary for us! I can't ever watch scary movies or read scary thrillers!
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed Elly Griffiths' books - mysteries are my favorites.
I love the shedunnit podcast because it introduces me to writers I'm not familiar with in the crime fiction world. I think that's where I found this writer.
DeleteThat's another ticked off the to-do list. We have never had trick or treaters here. It was strange the first year, coming from a city neighborhood. I don't even think about Halloween. A good cup of tea and a mystery is a very nice way to spend an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the Halloween all over the internet thing. I skipped a few blogs yesterday because I knew they'd use triggering images, so I took a day off from them, and other social media. Fine now! I'm not quite as triggered by Cmas.
DeleteOh, I missed this about why you needed (or didn't need?) an exterminator. I will read on!
ReplyDeleteYou missed all the whining! Turned out to be a false alarm in the end.
DeleteThe only trick or treaters I had were Ian and Liam before they headed out into the neighborhood--lol!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how the exterminators can spray around inside the house when you have cats or dogs or other pets?
It was a controlled spray, small nozzle, aimed at the baseboards. He said nontoxic, just keep animals away for 30 minutes.
DeleteBlink and October is done is so true. We may need an exterminator for wasps in our basement. Haven’t seen any for two days so maybe…
ReplyDeleteThey may be sleeping..
DeleteYes, Boud, last month did go by fast and perhaps because of our travels, both the anticipation and then the actual trip. I have called woefully behind in blog reading and commenting since none was done while away. it seems that accessing blogger from another country is not the easiest thing to do, so easier to just avoid. Hope the inspection bill is not too much as this does seem the time of year for payments. We have 3 insurance payments due in mid-December; checks will go out the start of that month.
ReplyDeleteThis year has presented me with so many unexpected bills, including some big ones.
DeleteI think there's a bit of rebelliousness involved with celebrating Halloween. Instead of preaching against it once embraces he sinister, at least temporarily.
ReplyDeleteAround here the pressure is all in celebrating it and being called unflattering names if you don't.
DeleteI am in eastern PA, not far from NJ. The wind was wicked. I walked with 4vlittle girls and their parents. My oldest granddaughter was Dorothy Gale, and it was quite in keeping with the weather.
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely wear warm clothes under your costume weather.
